It is the beginning of March 1996 before computers and cell phones were widely used, when you had to meet someone by chance in person. A simpler time. Lisa Riley works for Abundant Life Schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the main office where she meets Ryan Jones and wants to date him, but company policy says as long as he is building a school for the company, it is against the rules. Ryan's identical twin to the rescue. Then they are allowed to date.

A few weeks ago, I shared the plan to redecorate my daughters room. Her and I worked together to create a design inspired by a large custom pop art canvas of our dog Murphie, from AllPopArt.com. With the popart as our guide, putting the room design together was so simple. The graphic quality, simple striking design, sharp contrast and gorgeous color combination of the art gave us our cues for the elements of the new space. Here it is... We started with a fresh, light gray wall color (Essential Gray by Sherwin Williams). The art made it SO easy to choose the perfect wall color. We simply matched the gray found in the art to a paint color and used a shade lighter on the color card. That way it complimented the art without matching it exactly. To mimic the striking contrast of the black in the art, we chose a shiny black chandelier {Ebay}. By keeping everything else light, the black chandy punctuates the space. One flip through the PB Teen catalog and Hannah found the perfect bedding. The colors and simple graphic pattern were a perfect companion to the art. To soften it up a bit, we added the white rosette pillow {PB Teen} and whispy white layered drapes from Target. Even though the pop art is graphic and modern, we wanted to keep the space feeling soft and inviting. We incorporated vintage pieces, thrifted accessories and sentimental items to make the new, contemporary space feel warm and familiar to Hannah. Her desk used to be a vintage four post bed has special meaning to her. We gave it a fresh coat of glossy white paint, and updated the area with new accessories. The acrylic chair was a $10 Big Lots find and the monogrammed pillow is from PB Teen. Hannah and I worked together to create a set of four magnetic memo boards for the wall over the desk. You can see the step by step tutorial for the boards and the flower magnets, here. Not only are thrift stores my favorite place to shop for accessories, but it's a fun place to get the kids involved in the decorating process. Hannah and I went on a thrifting excursion and collected picture frames. I'll share the details of this project soon. Another simple thrift store makeover project was this collection of jewelry boxes. {click here to see the tutorial} We're using them on the dresser for stashing hair ties, lipgloss, earrings etc. I found the iron candelabara on the curb. We loaded it up with her Great Grandmothers vintage costume jewelry for a pop of color as well as some of Hannahs modern day accessories {aviator shades...can you believe they're back?}. Lastly, the sconces were a garage sale find. I updated them to match the new chandy and used them to flank a vintage mirror over her dresser. The trundle bed {Murphie's bed} was also updated with new bedding {Kohls}. Storage boxes from PB Teen fill the bookcase, and provide a place for cd's, dvd's, and other unattratives. By removing one of the shelves inside the bookcases we were able to sneak in a flatscreen tv. Here is a look back at the design board we put together when we first received our pop art proof from AllPopArt.com. It was so much fun working with Hannah to bring the pop art inspired design to life. It was a good reminder that inspiration for design can come from anywhere. When it comes from something/someone that has special meaning to you {Murphie}you'll be sure to love the end result. In addition to pet paintings, AllPopArt.com has many other options for custom portraits on canvas. This was a sponsored post, but I can honestly say, I was so happy with the purchase that I will be ordering from them again. The beautiful portrait we received will be cherished for years. {You can read more about the experience here}

As I have mentioned before, Blaze's room is very, very small. To make optimal use of the space, I have placed the chest-of-drawers up against the back of the footboard of the bed. Over the weekend, I put together a mirror that looks like a porthole to hang on the back of the footboard. This makes the chest-of-drawers seem more like a dresser with a mirror. I have no idea what this round metal thing is supposed to be. I bought it for $2 at Skycraft. I glued some flat round wooden disks, evenly spaced, around the metal ring, and then spray painted the whole thing with metallic gold paint. I made grooves on each wooden disk with an X-acto knife, to make them look more like screws. Then I glued a mirror to the metal ring and a piece of wire, for hanging, to the back of the mirror. The mirror was the largest size of plain round mirror that they sold at the craft store. I used lots of glue and didn't worry about being messy, since the back of the mirror won't show and my main concern was ensuring that the mirror wouldn't fall.

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside... Oh dear, ... ... summer time blogging is perhaps... ... a little optimistic... Particularly if... ... one is meant to stick to interior decorating or garden themes... ...when all one wants to do is dip one's toe in the gorgeous waters in Cornwall! Well, technically, we are not on holiday yet. The boys are still in school for another two weeks, but a sunny weekend not long ago, we said goodbye to our lovely-but-oh-so-inland town and enjoyed the sweet little Cornish coastal town of Padstow, with its STUNNING beach and marine spirit. The boys loved playing on the beach, even if the first photo above reveals that the water temperature was perhaps not as Mediterranean as the "azure" colours of the water... It is no surprise painters flock to Cornwall: the colours, the views, the LIGHT! Well, as I am very fond of the New England nautical theme, and as this is still attempting to be an interior decorating blog, here is a reprisal of some images from my older son's room, where there is a mixed theme of sea and space. The boat-shaped shelves on the wall were found in a charity shop for a few pounds, and with a lick of paint and a couple of bent plastic pipes (for "blast-off purposes"..), they were quickly turned into space rockets. The nautical theme is easily achieved with a few stars here and there, and rejected old jeans offer the perfect material for a denim star appliquéd onto a cushion. The marine inspired star picture below was made with some rough pieces of wood, which on purpose were allowed to "separate" a little, in order to give them a slightly weathered look. A painted star with stars and then, the final touch: a tiny piece of thin wood with a printed sign glued on (with transparent decoupage glue), indicating - rather falsely, I confess - that our little town boasts a marina... You can find more images from this room here. Thank you SO much for your kind words about my last blog post and welcome to all of you new readers! I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer, wherever you are! Helena
