You might remember Lauren’s style from her bedroom before and after; she turned a kind of boring bedroom into an exciting nautical and rustic-themed retreat. Well she’s back on a smaller scale, infusing some serious fun into an inherited desk from the in-laws. From Lauren: This past summer, I made over a roll-top desk we inherited from my in-laws…and it’s my new favorite project!

Inside a Birmingham, Alabama, Tudor house and garden.
PRESENTING a GLORIOUS PIECE OF AMERICANA namely, a 19C American Cutler & Sons Model 1 Roll Top Desk. This is the prototype of the well known Cutler & Sons Patented Desk and could very possibly be the Exhibition piece for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Known as Model No 1 this desk was one of the very first model desks made by Cutler to show off its recently patented roll top or cylinder fronted desk with the front of the desk folding under the desk section. You will see the marketing brochure (with the photos) wherein this desk is called “The Best Cylinder Desk in the World. Cutler’s Patent Business Desks. No 1. Full French Plate Glass Top, elegantly paneled and veneered front, ends and back.” The pricing is noted thereon as $162. Made of a combination of walnut with gorgeous burl walnut panels. Stunning swirl detail to the back and sides. The French plate glass panels are all original with beveled edges. The removeable interior shelving consists of 12 cubbies with 4 drawers attached by 2 brass rods and a central brass carousel clip holder with the word ‘standard’. The desk is lined with green felt or baize. The base section consists of 2 pull out writing panels and 4 drawers on either pillar. 3 small and one larger one to the bottom. The drawers are full marked (see photos). FANTASTIC detail throughout and in great condition for it’s age. The reason we believe that this could easily have been one of the desks, Cutler exhibited in Philadelphia in 1876, is because it is one of their VERY RARE Model Number 1 desks and the detail and quality is what one would expect in an exhibition piece. The glass panels on all sides and on the top are clearly designed so that one can still view the interior with the desk front up. What better way to show off or exhibit your newly patented roll top mechanism ? Provenance: From an Outstanding Private Dallas Collection. Condition: Very good. Some minor losses through age and use but nothing significant. Dimensions: 57 inches Tall, 58 inches Wide and 36.5 inches Deep. Knee Clearance of 29.75 inches. Base section is 30.5 inches tall.
Well, I'm happy to finally be finished this project! I started it last spring just before I started feeling icky with my pregnancy. I worked at it s-l-o-w-l-y for awhile then ceased altogether. Until last week. I had a burst of energy and decided it's time to get this project DONE! I had bought this vintage age roll top desk from Craigslist with the intention of giving it a few updates and reselling it. So, it's now for sale if you know someone in Northwest Ohio looking for a good solid desk. :) The people that were selling it had cats (read there was cat hair all over it) and it was their daughter's desk. It was good and solid but dirty and not pretty. They lived in a very small house and were getting a piano for their daughter so the desk had to go to make room for the piano. Here are some pictures of it "Before": And here it is after I added some cute little bun feet, changed the drawer pulls, painted it with Annie Sloan chalk paint (old white), and waxed it. I think it's 100% improved. You notice I didn't paint all the cubbies.... I was too lazy. :) I thought about just removing that part of it but there's just something I like about having it for organization. It was in good shape, unlike the top and the work surface. So, I just left it as it was. And I think it looks ok this way. The insides of the drawers were kinda marked up and ugly so I lined them with some pretty damask scrapbook paper. I didn't like the big 'blocky' drawer pulls so I found these pretty, vintage knobs with back plates on eBay. They were white so I gave them a coat of oil-rubbed bronze spray paint. I think they're much better. And here are some other shots 'just because'. In this picture you can see how I did the feet. First I added a board that was 1" larger than the bottom of the desk on 3 sides and screwed it down. Like this: These two pictures are shown with the desk upside down. Sorry, this is a really poor shot but it's the only one I have like this. Then I put cove (I think that's what it's called) moulding around it on the ledge I created. For the feet, I just bought bun feet and mounting plates from Menards. Screw the plates to the bottom of the desk and then screw the feet into the mounting plate. I didn't take any progress shots (they're boring anyway). And because I like side by side comparisons here's the before and after again: So there it is. Hopefully it will find a new home soon. Happy weekend, friends. And better yet, happy summer! You know what that means… school’s out… …the grills are heating up… …and in between those thrilling summer thunderstorms… …the beach is calling your name! Well, when the seasons change, I like to do a little event here at The Thinking Closet called The Reader Showcase. What’s it...
I love furniture, no doubt about that. But I do have a special crush on hutches and secretary desks. Actually anything that can unfold itself to me, open up and show the inside. There is just something to it..... This is an 80`s (possibly even 70`s) secretary desk. It was tiered and a little worn down. But nothing I knew I couldnt fix. When I first saw it, I knew the knobs had to go first thing. Well, that wasnt going to be very easy, because they were plugged in with wooden dowels and glued ALOT! I used every trick in the book to get them off. Finally, they went. Heres a few before pictures... See how rough the finish had become? But the wood was still so beautyfull, so I knew I wanted to keep some of the wood finish. I just had to give its old shine back. Allso, after seeing Jamie over at Andersons & Grant with her amazing two-toned rolled top desk in black, I instantly knew what I wanted the end results to be! I used Miss Mustard Seeds Typewriter for this job. I just lovet the matt, chalky finish on it. I sanded to top with machine, then I stained it. Everything that wasnt painted in black, got a few layers with hempseed oil. I have allways wanted to try MMS hemseed oil, but I havent gotten my hands on it yet, so I actually dared to try a hempseed oil from a regular health product store. And it worked like a charm! (but still want to try MMS`s...) I just love the effect on the rolled top! I sanded quite a bit to bring out the gold-like oak. Instead of waxing, I used the hempseed oil on it. All the pull handles were replaced with these golden knobs. They are just the perfect crown on this jewel. I sanded quite a bit all around the edges of the desk, to make it look more vintage. I can just imagine sitting here, writing hand-written letters on old, yellowed paper with an ink pen. Hopefully someone else will allso se the nostalgic charm in this old, renewed rolled top desk. Paint is amazing stuff. It covers a multitude of sins, and the right colors transform a surface from beat-up to practically new. Other people look at beautiful wood and think it’s a shame to …
