Story Decorative, textured earthenware with a rustic burnt finish, these pots are crafted in Uganda from locally sourced clay. In rural Northern Uganda you will find the village of Akiliba, home to our artisan partners who are determined to use pottery as a way to sustain their entire community. Their beautiful creations are hand-built using locally sourced clay and then stacked into a brush-covered mound for firing. Because of their remote location and a lack of transportation, the group was unable to access the larger markets in the area, limiting the amount of pottery they could sell. Now, through Obakki's partnership, we've been able to help them travel to these markets, enabling the community to grow a sustainable local source of income. Details MEASUREMENTS: Range from ~ 15 to 18 cm Diameter x 13 cm Depth ~ 6 to 7" Diameter x 5" Depth MATERIALS: 100% clay ORIGIN: Uganda This is not a vase - they are not meant to hold water or the clay will soften. Please note, each bowl is handmade using natural clay and fired in open flame; therefore, pigments and shapes may differ from piece to piece. Product Care Decorative use only. Michigan-based artist Pat Perry (previously) spent most of 2014 living a transient life spread across the U.S. His travels took him backpacking, train hopping, and motorcycling with stops in New England, Arkansas, and Texas, all the while dutifully recording his thoughts and observations in his sketchbook. The presence of rural America is a near-constant presence in Perry’s work, as well as the frustrations and occasional warnings of humanity colliding with the natural world. More

While I have no artistic ability when it comes to painting, art is a medium that I find fascinating and peaceful. And while it's technically not book related, I consider paintings to be communication without words. So I would like to occasionally share some artwork and hope that you will enjoy this regular feature as much as I do. If you like these paintings or one stands out to you, please share. Girl in Blue Evgeny Balakshin Evgeny Balakshin is a Russian artist, born in 1962 in Saransk, Russia. According to his bio, his paintings "have a deep and philosophical presence, characteristic of the Russian school of painting." Balakshin does some still life paintings, but it's his portraits of children and village life that I enjoy most (click on each image for a larger view).
