Description UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. nnnnnnio ADEE, on NEW YORK, n. Y. IMPROVEMENT IN URlNAL-SHIELDS. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,078, dated January 7, 1879; application filed December 8, 1878. To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRED. ADEE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Urinal-Shields, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings. In the ordinary construction of the urinalbasin it is customary that the water-supply pipe enter the basin from above, while the drain-pipe leaves it from below. These wa terpipes and drain'pipes are connected by putty joints to the urinal-basin by means of nipples attached to and forming part of said basin. The urinal-basin is formed of porcelain or earthenware. The pipes, on. the other hand, being of lead or other metal, present an unsightly appearance, and it is customary to. conceal them by means of caps or shields attached to the urinal-basin, and concealing the joints of the water and drain pipes. These shields have heretofore been made of metal; but it has been found impossible to preserve the surface of these metallic shields, owing to the action of the fluids upon them. Therefore, after a few days use, their surface becomes disintegrated and oxidized and very unsightly. It has been known that metal is oxidizable by the action of the liquid ,urine; but it has not been known until lately that metal was oxidizable by the gases arising therefrom. Nor has it been known that porcelain would resist the action of such gases; and my apparatus is made for the purpose of preventing the oxidation of metal by the gases arising from urine, as distinguished from an oxidation arising from the liquid itself. The object of my invention is to produce a urinal-shield which shall avoid these difficulties, and at the same time, being composed of the material of the basin itself, will be less noticeable, and will form a better finish. I purpose to make these shields or covers of porcelain or earthenware, corresponding to the material of the basin itself. Shields made in this way are very readily cleaned if they should become at all foul, and are not liable to the effects of oxidation and deterioration of their surface which I have previously mentioned. They are also cheaper than the metal shields, and are very readily attached to the urinal-basin. My invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective elevation of my basin with the shields attached; Fig. 2, a central vertical cross-section of the same. A represents the basin, which may be of porcelain or similar material. B and B represent the shields. O and D represent the water-pipe and drain-pipe attached to the nipples E and F, to which they may be attached by means of the ordinary putty-joint. H reprepresents the drain-holes at the bottom of the basin. By means of these contrivances the connecting-j oints are entirely concealed by the shields, which are readily accessibleand removable, and which may be easily cleansed. The shields may be attached to the basin by some cement, preferably plaster-of-paris. I arrange them also to be screwed to the wall by screws screwed therein, so as to bring them into close contact with the top and bottom of the basin. By attaching them wit-h screws in this way they are readily removed. WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is As a new article of manufacture, a urinalshield made of porcelain, as distinguished from one made of metal, whereby greater econ omy, purity, and cleanliness are obtained, substantially as described. Description (No ModeL) G. RYBR. HRB ESCAPE. No. 303,955i Patented Aug. 5, 1884. /fz vez? fa): N, PETERSA Pnomumognpher. wasmngmn C4 c. UNITED STATES PATENT Enron. GEORGE REER, oF ROCKY rnLL, coNNEcrrcur. FIRE-ESCAPE. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,055, dated August 5, 1884. Application filed February 2G, 1883. (No model.) . Fig. 2 is a view of the Vdevice used with the ladder. The letters a e denote two ropes, preferably of fibrous material, made fire-proof, and by preference also Water-proof, and provided at the ends with hooks b,for taking hold of a window-sill or the like. Both ends may have such hooks, if desired. The letters c denote the rungs of a ladder made of some material which is stiii' in distinction from material that is pliable like a rope. `In the present case they are made of wood with holes near the ends, through which y the ropes a pass, lwhich ropes are knotted on i both sides of each rung, so as to hold the rungs inv place. V I deem it essential that the ropes of this ladder should beof iibrous material, in order that they may be very flexible, so that the contrivance may be carried in a portmanteau or stored under the bed; and in connection with such brous ropes it is essential that the run gs he `made of some stiff material-as Wood or the like-so that when a person steps upon a rung the two ropes at the sides shall not be drawn together. The hooks at the end are essential that the device may be attached to the inside of a WindoW-sill,or to any convenient object in a bed-chamber. In Fig. 2 I showa device for use in connection with the ladder, which is shown in Fig. 1, the fact being that most Women and children and many timid men and boys could hardly be got to descend a ladder Without some other protection. This device I am now about to describe aiiords such protection. It consists of a knotted rope, d, looped at the upper end, -so that a person in the chamber may get a good grasp of it. The knots permit the person who is descending` the ladder to get a goed grasp ofthe rope. At the lower end thereof there is a padded strap, e, for encircling the person about the Waist or under the arms, with loops at the end, through which the lower end of the loop d is slip-noosed, so that a pull on the rope gives the padded strap a firm embrace of the person who is descending the ladder. This device I intend to be used in con junction with the ladder shown in Fig. 1,When a Weak or timid person is descending. The padded strap e is slipaioosed under the Waist'. The person descending may or may not take hold of the knots in the rope. The upper end of the rope is held meanwhile by a person in the room above, who pays out the rope as the person on the ladder descends. . I claim as my improvement- 1. The padded safetystrap c, combined with a slip-noosed and knotted rope, d, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. 2. rIhe combination of the ladder and the device composed of the padded strap c and slip-noosed and knotted rope d, all substantially as described, and'for thc purpose set forth. OBERMAYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. DOUBLE CIGAR-CUTTER. I Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 13, 1906. ' Application filed February 3,1906. Serial No. 299,340. To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. OBERMAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Double Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to cigar-cutters of the type carried in the pocket, my more particular object being to provide the cutter with a large number of cutting edges so disposed as to enable different pairs of them to be used independently of other pairs, the arrangement being such that when the cutter is folded and ready to be carried in the pocket the cutting edges are so disposed as to be harmless. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved cutter as held by the operator for the purpose of cutting a cigar. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the cutter in position ready to receive and to out the ends of a cigar. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the cutter as folded and ready to be carried in the pocket. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section upon the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow and showing the cutter as folded. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section upon the line 5 5 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow and showing how the cutting edges are rendered harmless when the cutter is folded, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged section upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow and showing the relative arrangement of the shearing members-when the device is ready for action. Two shearing members 1 2 are each given substantially the form of a shield. The member 2 is provided with an eye 3, into wh IE is inserted a link 4 for enabling the deto be suspended from a chain or placed n a key-ring or the like, if desired. The shearing members 1 2 are pivoted together by means of a pin 5. Each of the shearing members 1 2 is provided with beveled cutting edges 6, these beveled edges upon each .shearing member being concaved and being disposed oppositely in pairs, as will be understood from Fig. 3. The shearing members 1 2 are also provided with apertures '7 for allowingthe insertion of the thumb and fingers of the operator, as indicated in Fig. 1. The operation of my device is as follows: When the cutteris to be carried in the pocket, the shearing members 1 and 2 are brought into registry with each other, as indicated in Fig. 3. While in this position the beveledcutting edges 6 of one member form "obtuse angles with the corresponding beveled edges 6 of the other member, as may be seen by inspecting Fig. 5. The cutting edges are thus to allintents and phrposes rendered blunt and incapable of cutting so long as the device remains folded, as indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. If now the operator-desires to cut a cigar, he moves the shearing members 1 2 substantially into the relative osition indicated in Fig. 2 andinserts his t umb and one finger through the a erture 7, as indicated in Fig. 1. The end of t e cigar 8 being now inserted between the cutting edges 6 the operator squeezes the shearing members toward each other somewhat after the manner of working a pair of scissors, and thus cli s the end of the cigar. It will be observed, owever, that as each shearing member 1 2 has oppositelydisposed cutting edges 6 the shearing members in question can be swung past each other in two directions relatively to the normal position indicated in Fig. 3that is to say, inFig. 3, for instance, the shearing member 1 may be moved either to the right or to the left relatively to the other shearing member, and according to the direction of this movement the one pair or the other pair of oppositely-disposed cutting edges 6 is brought into requisition. To explain further, referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the shearing member 1 is to the right of the shearing member 2. It is obvious that by forcing the shearing members toward each other the device should take the position indicated in Fig. 3, the shearing members being now in exact registry with each other. If now the shearing member 1 be moved to the left and the shearing member 2 be moved to the right, it is obvious that the relative osition of the shearing members 1 and 2 wili be different'from that shown in Fig. 2, and it is also obvious that the device is ready for use, although different cutting edges 6 are now brought into requisition. The cigar-cutter has therefore two pairs of cutting edges, only one pair being in use at a time. Such being the case, the length of service perstruction. l l bers may be rotated completely around said ivot as a center, each of said shearing mend;- ers being provided with two oppositely-disposed cutting edges.
