Sculptor Tach Pollard (previously) works with sustainably sourced hawthorn wood to form lustrous sculptures of mythological figures. After carving the wood, the UK-based artist finishes it with blow torches to form the dark bodies that contrast with the pale, peaceful faces on each sculptural figure. Pollard draws inspiration from myths and spiritual traditions from around the world, including Inuit and Celtic traditions, and is particularly drawn to the notions of shapeshifting and sea creatures. Laden with a strong sense of introspection, artist Bruno Walpoth’s wooden sculptures appear nearly alive in their realism. However, upon closer inspection one can view the line work and cuts of his carving technique, adding sublime textures to their wooden skins. Often exposed and situated alone within their installations, the pale figures appear caught in a moment of reverie, silent in their musings. View more of the life-like sculptures after the jump.
Based in Richmond, Virginia artist Morgan Herrin transforms the most humble material—laminated construction grade 2x4s—into spectacularly detailed figurative sculptures. His choice of imagery is surreal: a noble 15th century knight melts into a network of dripping stalagmites or a classical marble bust that is overgrown with parasitic sea creatures. The resulting works are a fascinating juxtaposition of material and subject matter that require up to a year of labor to produce. Of the untitled knight piece Herrin says: Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. More

Hailing from fifteen countries, the individuals participating in Eyes as Big as Plates have backgrounds as varied as their surroundings: there are zoologists, academics, and librarians; fishermen, wild boar hunters, and Sami reindeer herders; and opera singers, kantele players, and artists. They’re tethered by the ongoing project, which dresses each figure in sculptural wearables made of organic materials that allow them to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Launched in 2011 by Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen (previously), Eyes as Big as Plates hinges on the idea that it’s essential to explore how humans exist within nature. Man and nature must coexist for the sake of the planet, and as technology becomes more ingrained in our everyday lives some people are beginning to lose touch with the natural world.Japanese sculptor Ishibashi Yui knows how important it is for mankind to maintain contact with our earthly roots, and his series of sculptures are populated by human-plant hybrids, like a mad scientist’s experiment gone wrong, or more like mother nature reclaiming what belonged to her all along. We’re only borrowin...
