2017 Topic 7: Found Objects Ali Clifford Well hello everyone, Darcy here with the latest topic, this time we are scavenging, recycling, treasure hunting and re-purposing. Our new challenge is all about 'found objects' and using them in art. This means not not using things that are intended for art, but instead looking around you and creating art with what you can find. Interest in found objects is not new, but instead can be traced back to the 16th century. Items were displayed in private 'curiosity cabinets' these items were not used in art though until the 19th century. The name is a literal translation from the French, objet trouvé, this referred to objects that had non art functions that were then transferred into an art context. This led to a small art movement known as 'the readymade' Picasso used bits of a woven chair on his canvas, Degas used real tutu fabric on his ballerinas. Scour your attics, old toy boxes, sheds and garages, keep an eye out when walking in the park or the beach. You would not believe how many lost shoe buckles I have picked up in car parks! Maria Fantastic papers can be made by stamping with found objects, we will look at a few examples, but I wonder, what have you got in your cupboards and drawers that you could try stamping or painting with? As for painting, why use brushes? what could you use instead. Embellishments too can be found, broken jewellery, disassembled clocks, ornaments, clothing. Pretty soon your eye will be caught by any little object left behind by others, looking at it in a new light, wondering what you can make. So much fun can be had trying to make things fit, so who is up for a bit of Wombling? Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 6: Resin and UTEE Challenge... The winner of Resin and UTEE is: Claire from Claire's Crafty Makes Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] So, to begin any project we need to create a base, with paper crafts we generally start with painted or patterned papers. So let's see some fabulous examples of how those can be created with all kinds of weird and wonderful objects. Just look at these beautiful delicate flower prints, made with real flowers! Robin Clement There are lots of packaging elements that can be used with ink and paint, bubblewrap is a great one but I adore these hearts, who knew the humble loo roll tube could print so well. Tammy Have you tried bubble art? washing up liquid and inks and a straw can all be 'found' in your house, blow some bubbles and create gorgeous paper. Yaser What about food printing, the thought of this always makes me smile, and takes me back to childhood potato prints. This corn on the cob makes a great repeating pattern. This next one is stunning, I can't believe it is a vegetable print. BTW I have no idea what Treviso radicchio is but I feel the need to find one! Martha Stewart Watch how this painting comes to life just using cotton buds. Now you have your painted backgrounds, time for some embellishments. A really effective and inexpensive way to make embellishments is to use clay, specifically paper clay. I spend most of my days beachcombing and searching for sea treasures for making sea-themed jewelry. I am not only searching for seashells and corals, but also for rare sea glass and sea pottery. One of my proudest finds is a 200-year-old undamaged Maraschino bottle, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

I and the children LOVE these AMAZING trash liner jellyfish. So simple, and yet such an amazing addition to our OCEAN/SEA theme. I have added a Youtube tutorial at the bottom. To make these I used two 10 gallon commercial trashcan liners, the ones for small office trash cans, at a cost of about 5 cents and about 10 minutes of time each. #1 The first liner is opened up, four "corners" [just grab the edge about every 1/4 around] brought together and stapled, then stuffed down into the center of the bag to create a bowl shape. #2 For the second liner, cut off the sealed edge. It is accordion folded in fourths. Unfold completely and fold over once to create a square, giving you four layers of plastic. Cut off the edges and cut into spiral. I did about a 1 - 1 1/4 inch thickness. The wider the strip the shorter the "tentacles." I didn't try to be that accurate or to make a perfect circle. I knew once they were opened out that it wouldn't matter. You end up with a pretty long strip. I folded it in half and cut it to create two strips of equal length. Since it's actually doubled over double layers, this gives you 8 tentacles total. Spread them all apart. \ If you try to attach them without separating them first, they will cling to one another and not fall properly to create the tentacle effect. Once separated, join them all together, placing them randomly together in a circle and stapling together. Since you have two sets of four of the same cut, this is important that they not sit perfectly together or it won't look right. Stick the tentacle staple up against the inside of the bowl shaped bag and push up with your hand. Collect all layers on the top, along with a string to hang if wanted, and staple. You can't see the staple on the ones I have up. The plastic folds over and hides it. The layers are: TENTACLES TOP OF BAG gathered together and folded over [pic below] BOTTOM CENTER OF BAG STRING FOR HANGING All are stapled through at once. I can now make them with just one stable through the whole thing, but it is easier to staple the tentacles first, then the top of the bag, then the combined pieces. These are WONDERFUL!! I'm so glad I came across the idea. I think my process is MUCH easier than the original instructions, which used clear rubber bands. This is an original idea of Casa Haus English that her daughter created for a school assignment. She placed her jellyfish creation on a stick and used it as a movable puppet. Our jellyfish did the same, which is really cool, but with 2 and 3-year-olds, playing with plastic bags just doesn't work. So, ours are hung from the ceiling. TUTORIAL I have received several emails about the bringing the "corners" together step, so have created the following tutorial. A couple of things to note is that for this one I used smaller liners than the ones in this post, and I folded the first liner in quarters rather than opening it out and folding it in half, so the tentacles came out shorter. Only the last staple is necessary. If you are making a lot of these, you'll probably get to the point where you can just hold it all together and only use the one staple. Have you ever seen a fish as it swims in water? We are sure that many of us have seen colorful fishes swimming around in the aquarium and spent hours being fascinated by the way they seem to have a purpose as they go around the tank. Sometimes we have even tried to interact with the fishes by holding a finger to the outside of the tank which the fish seems to be attracted to and tries to follow the movement of. If you are one of those who is into photography and are seeking new subjects to capture in the magical lens of your camera, then photographing fish would indeed be a good idea. The best aspect of fish photography is that you not only have a lot of choices with so many different species of fish, it is also an adventurous thing to do. After all, there are so many species of fish that exist in so many different types of waterbodies. We can even dare to go on a limb and say that it can be almost equated with adorable newborn photography ideas for your junior.
