It’s no secret that the whimsical leeway of 1960’s hippie culture still influences the world of fashion. Geometric patterns, folkloric motifs, bright colours and ecological sensibility that were popularized then are a swing that never faded away. Whether it’s on catwalks or inside millennial wardrobes, hints of escapism in the form of psychedelic t-shirts, tie dye shirts and long-flowing floral kaftans remain embedded in the echelons of fashion. Hippie Movement Mass protests and social movements rocked America in the 1960s. It all began in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood in San Francisco, where a group of young artists, musicians and professionals launched one of the biggest and most influential dress reform movements – rejecting the dictates of the society. They were all about ensuring freedom – of living, of expression and of love, and this was well-reflected in the kind of clothing they embraced. They adopted a Bohemian lifestyle; they seemingly ditched the sophisticated but conventional style, popularized by iconic figures like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy and spurred a hippie culture movement that took the fashion world by storm. What’s more, a healthy stream of tumultuous events crippled the United States during the 1960s, including the assassination of President Kennedy, the Vietnam War protests and the Civil Rights Movement - further intensified the already-ongoing hippie style clothing movement. Bohemian Fashion Gypsy scarves, Indian motifs and African fabrics became the order of the day. A strong resentment towards commercialism, consumerism and mass production was in the air. The eccentric independence of hippie culture threatened traditional fashion establishments. Needless to say, an offbeat fashion sense prevailed, which was both exotic as well as frivolous at that time. With vibrant pops of colours, ragged silhouettes and oodles of beads and jewellery, the hippies created a one-of-a-kind look based on creativity, individuality and fantasy. Psychedelic Style Bleeding colours forming geometric shapes then melting into vibrant swirls, amoeba patterns and Indian floral – psychedelic fashion was the end-product of the great hippie movement (Flower Power ideology), passive resistance and innate fascination in the culture of Far East, particularly Buddhism. Combining both music and visual art, this new breed of style exhibited escalated appreciation for texture and line and symmetry, all in sync with 1960s hippie trend. This sense of style was mostly popularized by music icons, such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix and quite obviously, the young generation of the 1960s joined the bandwagon. Vibrant colours and quirky tie-dye patterns started plaguing the market spreading the psychedelic craze like a wildfire. However, with time, the psychedelic culture lost its relevance due to over-saturation – but Bohemian fashion made frequent comebacks influencing today’s fashion industry. If you celebrate the power of colours as well individuality and the free-spirit vibe Hippie Culture propagated, look up to Huedee. With its unique tie dye clothing collection, Huedee is the very first luxury tie dye brand in India that believes in boosting mental health awareness through comfort and colours. Joyce Luana, Empatia.

Date: 1914 Size: 9.5 x 12.5 Artist: SEM/Goursat About The Poster: Music sheets like these were popular in Paris in the early 20th century. Artists like Misti, Ibels and Steinlen helped popularize the medium when they illustrated the famous "Paris en Chanson" series of music sheets in the 1890s. This particular booklet was for a piece by famous French chansonnier Felix Mayol (the handsome fellow depicted), named Cousine. According to Wikipedia, a piece entitled Cousine from 1918 is part of Mayol's filmography, hence our dating of this booklet to 1918. Wikipedia also writes: "Mayol was born in Toulon, France. His parents were both amateur singers and actors, who arranged for Felix to make his debut stage at six years of age. In 1895 he went to Paris and the Montparnasse Quarter where he began a career in entertainment that spanned more than forty years. He adopted a camp and effeminate manner on stage as part of his theatrical persona.[1] He sang the famous song "Viens poupoule, viens poupoule, viens...", and performed many songs by Théodore Botrel. In the early years of the 20th century some of Mayol's performances were captured by an early form of talking picture. He would record his voice, then the motion picture camera would film him as he lip-synced to the record. Several of his "Phono-Cinema" films exist." Mayol's portrait, characterized by the fluffy red-hair you see in this piece, was a comon image in French popular culture at the time. Another poster advertizing the singer as "le chanteur comique de Paris" was recently estimated to be worth between 2500 and 3000 (*Poster Auctions International, Feb. 13th 2011 Winter Sale). Needless to say, for lovers of pop culture, comedy, or history, this piece is quite collectible, AND affordable! Signed SEM, which was renown artist Georges Goursat's pseudonym. "Sem’s unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. His work is particularly associated with the Belle Epoque and, during this period, he wrote numerous articles chronicling theatre shows, fashion, travel and artistic reviews. He also created a number of very beautiful posters illustrating subjects like the clowns Footit and Chocolat, the tourist towns of Deauville, Cannes and Monte Carlo, and also a number of businesses including Benedictine." (The Virtual Absynthe Museum: http://www.oxygenee.com/absinthe/art8.html) This piece is matted and framed. In excellent condition.
