A few weeks ago, I finally got around to calling William and Lorelei’s dentist to make appointments for them. They hadn’t been there for over a year–I’d had to cancel one appointment, and then I got a little distracted by my house burning down. Making those appointments had been on the list for awhile, and […]

Postcards of the infamous exotic dancer who was convicted and executed by the French during World War One for being a German spy have remerged 100 years after her death. Images show Mata Hari, the Dutch-born woman executed by a French firing squad on October 15 1917, posing in a variety of vibrant colours for a series of postcards sold in Paris the early 1900s. Hari can also be seen pulling different poses from her dancing routines in the set of shots, which were commissioned over 10 years before her death, in 1906.

Once the maypole is set up, the children can dance to a waltz, a polka, a jig, or any tune you choose. Our dancers kept track of their braiding by chanting, "Go over it, then under it, and over it and under it," to keep from getting tangled in their ribbons.

The David Phillips, Sr. house is Bradford's most distinctive high style Queen Anne mansion said to have been built in 1889. Mr. Phillips was born in England in 1845 and arrived in Bradford in the 1880's to set up a machine shop for the oil business. He soon amassed a fortune and built this house for himself and his wife. Unfortunately, he died in California in 1895 while trying to recover from tuberculosis. The Phillips House features all of the hallmarks of the style such as towers, turrets, stained glass, organic, flowing, asymmetrical massing, and profuse ornamentation inside and out. Architect is unknown but likely came from nearby Buffalo, NY or Erie, PA.. An early photo of the house shows a window where the fire escape door is now on the gable. It also shows an ornamental projecting window hood to the right of the gable, now missing. (an early Congress St. postcard was recently purchased and will soon be posted in this set) Houses of this type were once fairly common but are now somewhat rare. It was bought in 2009 by an e-Bay architectural salvage dealer and it's fate is unknown.
digital C-print, edition of 10 30 x 20 inches unframed This contemporary c-print pictures a classic 1950's housewife in a beautiful pink dress and black high heels in a floral wallpapered bedroom lustfully looking at muscular models in men's health magazines. Assorted phallic like vegetables further perpetuate the representation of the housewife's lust for the hunky male models. Her dress is slightly undone in the back while her black high heels dangle from her swinging feet. As she relaxes on the pale navy blue bedspread a classic depiction of Jesus Christ hangs overhead, although his eyes look away from the housewife's sinful implications. The beautiful imagery mixed with the suggested narrative provides the viewer with an ironic and comical twist to the typical representation of a 1950's housewife. About work: Photography as a medium has a dual character. Since its introduction, artists have used it to produce both art as well as document the world around them. For Chicago artist Newbold Bohemia, photography is a little bit of both: his photo series have documented real life issues, presented in staged, then manipulated images from his imagination. In his playful yet devious new series, “In an Ideal World,” Bohemia visualizes the story of a rebellious 1950s woman in the domestic world. Even the name Newbold Bohemia is a fabrication. The artist’s namesake serves as a reminder to create art dedicated to the pillars of Bohemian society: Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love. All of these are present in his “In an Ideal World” series, set in a beautiful, idyllic version of the 1950s, where a blonde femme fatale-housewife comes to terms with life’s truths. As he captures her day to day chores, Bohemia comments on the not-so-idyllic reality of gender roles, and his heroine’s oppression and anger. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States.

Looking at these installations, I imagine they are like clues indicating a secret trail somewhere otherworldly. Like something out of a children’s book, Hansel and Gretel have left a trail, but instead of white pebbles, this time they’ve left retro lamps. Alas it’s not Hansel and Gretel with a new flair for vintage objects, this…
