Jessica Wohl is a Tennessee-based trained illustrator, who is now working in the fields of drawing, painting, collage, installation and performance. Her work evolves around the concept of home and it’s residents. She proves that looks can be deceiving with the use of drawing and sewing on family based imagery and by that disorders these […]
In Isabel Wilkerson’s book “Caste”, she references the census bureau which “announced its projection [in 2008] that by 2042, for the first time in American history, white would no longer be the majority...” The prospect is compelling and in anticipation, I created these sewn collages of skin tones remapping places that loosely reference city grids. I mixed more than seventy skin tone colors (inspired by the photographs of Angelica Dass in her ongoing project “Humanae.”) I learned how to generate each particular skin tone that tends to objectify the human, but in the studio, an equalization occurs that doesn’t exist in the world outside my studio. The mixing is an action that connects to the brain, so I can feel a cognitive and emotional shift. My hope is to continue to carry that feeling out of the studio. About The Artwork This collaged is built from old books, old prints, and residue from other projects in the studio. I think a lot about how memories change over time; that the same memory gets remembered differently each time - even though we think it is the same. Thus memories are intuitive stories not always rooted in the truth! London themed mini fabric collage This is a tiny original textile collage by Kim Edith, perfect for any London lovers out there! It is made from a collection of fabric pieces and printed fabric hand stitched onto a felt background. The main image of Big Ben is a piece of found vintage ephemera which has been transferred onto fabric. The word has been hand stamped onto ribbon and sewn onto the background. The collage features additional embroidery and button and sequin embellishment. The artwork has been mounted in white mount board and signed by the artist. It comes in a cellophane bag to protect the delicate parts and mountboard corners. This is a small (and therefore super cute) artwork so check the size before you buy! The artwork size is 9.25 x 6.25 cms (3.5 x 2.5") and the mount is 15.2 x 10.2 cms (6 x 4"). This will fit into a standard frame size of 6x4" - but make sure the frame isn't too shallow as the work is slightly three dimensional.
