An evocative portrayal of vulnerability and resilience, this artwork captures a visage seemingly trapped behind shards of shattered glass. The fragments create a mosaic of emotions: the eyes, a brilliant shade of azure, are filled with a mixture of hope and melancholy. They stand out as windows to a soul, yearning for freedom and understanding amidst a fractured world. The play of lights casts a spectrum of hues upon the shards, illuminating the subject's freckled skin, delicate lashes, and the faint blush of her cheeks. Each piece of broken glass tells its own story, distorting the image in varying degrees, yet collectively presenting a vivid, almost palpable emotion. The atmosphere is saturated with tension. The cold, jagged edges of the shards juxtapose the soft, warm features of the subject, emphasizing her fragility in the face of adversity. Yet, amidst the chaos, there is a sense of resilience. The eyes, though surrounded by fragmentation, remain intact, undeterred, and piercing through the chaos. This masterpiece resonates with themes of perseverance, inner strength, and the multifaceted nature of human experiences, reminding viewers of the beauty that can be found even in brokenness.

Birmingham, U.K.-based artist Zoë Hillyard revitalizes shattered vases and bowls by melding traditional craft techniques. She wraps a mishmash of vintage silks and fabrics around individual ceramic shards, binding the broken pieces with tightly stitched thread. Appearing glazed with antique florals and other ornate motifs, the patchwork forms contrast the original shape of the pottery with the newly mended exterior, a reconfigured finish that’s commonly disrupted by missing pieces and jagged edges. Gathering the source materials from ceramicists’ reject piles or by receiving broken family heirlooms for commissions, Hillyard works with the initial shape and purpose in mind. More

Like many traditional collage artist, the Glasgow-based Lola Dupré makes all her work out of simply paper, scissors and glue. But unlike most artists Lola goes further than relying on a simple juxtaposition of imagery to make a point. Instead she uses multiple copies of source material, using thousands of cuts and manipulating tiny shards of paper to create a strange, amorphous, almost fractal vision. Her work is like looking at a dissolving reality reflected in a spoon. In a recent interview on the Empty Kingdom blog, Lola says this of her modus operandi: t came about through experiments with paper as a sculptural medium, through a chance arrangement in 3D forms I began to think about applying it in 2D. I guess the work could say a few different things about me; I think I am meticulous and multi-dimensional as a person, perhaps that comes across in my work, I’m not sure. In my opinion, I create, and it is up to the viewer to decipher things and find meaning. You can read the rest of that interview here, and see all...

Read the interview at SPART.works _______________________________________ _______ _______ _______ The photography of Marianne Lind gives the impression of abstract paintings. Her motives are complex interpretations of light and color, or shards in a kaleidoscope, as Marianne herself would express it. Light is an electromagnetic radiation that is created when electrons are accelerating. White light exists within all the colours in the rainbow with different wavelengths. The sun as the source of radiation creates a continuous spectrum. When a flash of light hits a prism it will change its direction. The various colors refract differently and create a fantastic spectra of colours. In this fascinating borderland of refracting phenomena Marianne have caught the poetic power of light where the details that are difficult to see with the naked eye appear all the more distinctly through the eye of the camera. By using the ever changing quality of light, the structure of the glass medium and the surroundings, Marianne have been able to create a series of unique photographs of light refractions in glass. Her pictures are a personal interpretation of a fugacious reality.
