Hi all! Today I'm sharing a pretty tag I made for the latest challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie blog. The very talented Cec is our hostess this time and she's calling this one 'Things With Wings'. Use anything with wings as the focal point on your vintage or shabby chic projects. Be it of the animal, fantasy or mechanical variety, we want your creativity to take flight! I had all sorts of ideas about what I wanted to do - so many that I ended up putting them all on one of Ranger's oversized (#10) tags. This meant I could use all the embellishments, die cuts, and stamps I wanted! I started by adhering torn strips of French book pages and tissue tape to the tag. I brushed over it lightly with gesso to tone it down and give it some 'tooth' for the stain to adhere to. Next, I spritzed Cracked Pistachio and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Spray Stains onto a craft sheet and swiped the tag through the stains. How gorgeous are these colors together?! Love! After the stain dried I added a floral element with Texture Paste and Tim Holtz's Wildflower stencil. When the Texture Paste was dry, I lined up the stencil again and dabbed with glue, then added the glitter. (I tried adhering the glitter directly to the paste, but it didn't stick very well after it was dry.) After the background was done, I basically gathered up a bunch of supplies I had sitting on my desk and added them to the tag! The flowers were cut from plain white cardstock using Tim's Tattered Flowers die, spritzed with Perfect Peals mist and crumpled. When they were dry, I stacked them up and added a little pearl to the center. The little girl is from Tim's Found Relatives. She has little metal butterfly wings that were painted with Picket Fence Distress paint. I cut more French text using Tim's Harlequin Border die and added that to the top and bottom. Finally, I added an Industrious Sticker frame, Remnant Rubs, and a sentiment. I'm so happy with how this turned out! I love the sparkle of the flowers and the Distress Stain background is so pretty! Hello everyone, hope this finds you well. We've been painting the outside of our house (ugh!) and I haven't had a lot of time to spend in my studio but June is a very busy month in our family what with birthdays and Father's Day so I've snuck inside occasionally to make some cards and wanted to share them with you. For Father's Day I made two cards in the same style for my Dad and my FIL (don't tell them they got the same card LOL!). The background was stamped with Artistic Outpost's Ephemera Backgrounds stamp and the sentiment was die cut from silver Metallic Kraft Stock with Tim Holtz's Sentiment Words: Thin dies. The hat and bow tie are from Tim's Dapper stamp set and the wheel in the background is from The Professor stamp set. The 'Hat's Off!' sentiment is from Artistic Outpost's Hat's Off stamp set. The wheel was coloured with shades of blue Distress Oxide inks and the hat and bow tie were clear embossed and then tinted with Tumbled Glass Distress Ink. Birthday's were up next and this first card was made for my dear niece. The background is Tim's Typography Collage paper adhered onto kraft cardstock and I then layered up some of his Journal cards and Botanical Layers. The Sentiment Words: Thin dies made another appearance, this time cut from gold Metallic Kraft Stock and backed with white card. One of Tim's adorable Paper Dolls was given a pair of Botanical butterfly wings and coloured with Distress Crayons. I felt the right side needed a little something something so I browsed through my favourite Clippings Stickers and found the 'dream' quote which was absolutely perfect for my niece's card ❤ My lovely SIL's birthday was next and so I made her a simple (and for me CAS) birthday card, an elegant card for a beautiful and elegant woman ❤ I had a Blossom stencil monoprint in my stash so I realigned the stencil on the monoprint and applied Shabby Shutters Distress Ink through the stencil. The 'Happy Birthday' sentiment was die cut from gold Metallic Kraft Stock with a die from Simon Says Stamp. And one of Tim's Wildflower Stems 2 was also die cut from the gold Metallic Kraft Stock, gosh I love those dies! And that was it! As I said, a very CAS card for me and I even left some white space which is also unusual but I loved the look of the over-stenciled monoprint so much I didn't want to do anything else. Then it was time to make a birthday card for my Dad and it was inspired by Shelly Hickox's popup card that she made with Tim's Mini Blueprint stamps. I didn't have the pop up die that she had used so decided to make a trifold card instead using Tim's Stamptember 2014 and Stamptember 2015 Blueprint stamps from Simon Says Stamp (afraid they aren't available any longer). I coloured three Distress Mixed Media Heavystock panels with Tea Dye and Frayed Burlap Distress Inks, stamped each of the images with a different colour of Distress Archival Ink (Ground Espresso, Blue Jeans and Peeled Paint), clear embossed them and then watercoloured the images with Distress Inks and spritzed them all with Ground Espresso Distress Marker and the Distress Marker Spritzer. The party hat was coloured with Barn Door and Candied Apple. The blue ribbon was water coloured with Blueprint Sketch, Broken China and Chipped Sapphire. And the present was coloured with Mowed Lawn and Cracked Pistachio. All of the panels were mounted onto a piece of Dapper Paper Stash and another Distress Ink coloured panel added to the back that was stamped with sentiments from Simon Says Stamp's Birthday Balloons Clear Stamps set. I thought the shirt and tie paper was especially appropriate for a Dad birthday, how many ties do you think the average Dad gets for his birthday throughout his lifetime LOL?! And finally I made a card for my FIL's birthday, technically his birthday is not until July but I wanted to share it with you. He will be 93 years young in just a couple of weeks and is still going strong! I started with a piece of silver Metallic Kraft Stock embossed with Tim's Mechanics 3-D Texture Fades embossing folder and inked it with Black Soot Distress Archival Ink. Gearhead gears were die cut from Distress Mixed Media Heavystock and stippled with Distress Paints (Ground Espresso, Rusty Hinge, Aged Mahogany and Hickory Smoke) for a rusted appearance and stacked on top of some of the embossed Mechanics gears. My FIL worked his entire career with the Canadian National Railway so I found this vintage poster online and shrunk it down for his card. I printed the banner sentiment out on the computer and dipped it into puddles of Frayed Burlap Distress Ink to colour it, popping it up on some foam squares for a bit of dimension. The entire panel was then mounted onto a piece of Dapper Paper Stash and mounted onto a black card blank. So that's it for now, hope you have enjoyed seeing all of my June cards and I hope that all of the recipients like them :O) If you've been following along with my posts for #the100dayproject I am seriously behind and now with having to paint the house it looks like my projects will take more like 200 days! But I am determined to get them done even if it's not within the official timeline. Think I am on day 67 and it is now officially day 80 so my chances of catching up are slim to none unless it rains a whole lot so that I can't paint outside LOL! I'll be back when I get some more art journal pages to show you for my #100daysofartjournaling and until then happy creating! Deb xo
Hi everyone! I'm posting from CHA today - so excited to be here! I'll be keeping this brief, but I did want to give you a peek at one of the projects I made for Tim Holtz using the new Idea-ology findings and papers. The new Idea-ology Pulley Wheels are probably my favorite thing of all - my piece is basically built just to show them off! I also love the Mini Gears and Box Corners. So cool! Here, I used a Wire Pin to hold a Mini Numeral and a Vial that I attached using a Screw Eye. A Clock Key sits atop a little clock I made using a toilet paper tube (more about that later!), some leftover packaging, and a clock image from the new papers. All the little houses were cut from heavy mat board using the Sizzix Artful Dwellings die. I added a little door to this one - one of the new Faucet Knobs is perfect as a handle! One of my favorite new products is the Word Bands. Love this sentiment! Ok, must run now - CHA is open in 10 minutes! I'll try to share pictures when I can. If you want to follow my Twitter feed, the link is near the top on my sidebar. Hope you enjoyed this first project!
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Hope you all had a great day with your loved ones. I got to spend the day with my husband, driving from Indiana back home to Mississippi, with a little antiquing thrown in for fun. Not a bad way to spend the day! This little canvas was one of my projects for Tim's CHA Idea-ology release - love all of these different elements! The first thing I did was cover the edges of my canvas with the new Commute Tissue Tape. I added a bit of Pitch Black paint using an Adirondack Dabber. I covered the center portion with a piece of luggage print paper from the new Destinations Paper Stash. In the center of that, I added a panel that was cut from Kraft Core'dinations using the Sizzix Vintage Cabinet Card die, and then embossed with the new Subway Texture Fade, also from Sizzix. I sanded the raised portion with my Idea-ology Sanding Grip. Finding out the Plaquette fits the oval Faucet Handle was a very happy accident! From the faucet, I hung a heart cut from cardboard using the Love Struck die from Sizzix. I glued Idea-ology Eye Hooks into the crevice and hung the heart with copper wire. I added a couple of the new Mini Gears for a masculine touch (this is for my hubby!). After I cut the heart, I painted it with a Red Pepper Adirondack Paint Dabber and then sanded lightly when it was dry. Next, I stamped the sentiment from Stampers Anonymous' Stuff to Say collection with black pigment ink and embossed with Ranger's black embossing powder. Finally, I added a sticker from the new Chitchat Sticker Book and covered it with one of the new Label Pulls. Fun! I love all the new findings and papers and can't wait until everyone can buy them! If you're interested in pre-ordering these items, you can find them at Inspiration Emporium via the links below. Even better, you can use my coupon code - stamptramp - and save 10%! hey bloggers! thanks again for sharing in the excitement of all the new releases from cha. it’s always such fun to…
Hi everyone! Today I have one of my CHA card samples to share with you. This was displayed in the Sizzix booth and features TONS of new products from Tim Holtz. I have to tell you, this Sizzix release has some of the most exciting and innovative dies and Texture Fades I think I've ever seen. Here's a quick breakdown of how I created my card. The background was created by embossing manila cardstock with the new Blueprints Texture Fade. I inked it with Weathered Wood, Bundled Sage, and Brushed Corduroy Distress inks. I layered it onto a torn panel of the new French Industrial paper and then onto kraft cardstock, trimming the bottom with a strip of black Kraft Core'dinations that was cut using the Washer Border die. Finally, I added some of the new Elements Tissue Tape (love!!) along the edges. It's so hard to pick a favorite from the idea-ology release, but I think these ring fasteners are close to the top of my list! Here, I threaded it through a Sprocket Gear and attached it to my card. I added one of the new Tag Labels and a Swivel Clasp. I think these are going to be a definite must-have for me! The Pocket Watch Frame die is another one of my favorites. The exciting thing is that it's a Movers and Shapers die, so you can cut shapes out of the center. For this element, one of the Sized Circles Movers and Shapers was placed into the center when cutting the chipboard, creating the perfect frame for my watch. I stacked four of the watch frames and glued them together. I painted them silver and antiqued with black (my go-to metallic technique). The background paper is from the new French Industrial collection. I stamped the guys from the Stampers Anonymous Steampunk collection and added some of the new Remnant Rubs and some Sprocket Gears and Mini Gears. The 'glass' on the watch is recycled plastic packaging. Wouldn't this make a cool shaker card?! Inspiration Emporium has lots of the new product from CHA available for pre-order. Hi all! I came across this card on Pinterest that was pinned from a store's site and realized I'd never shared it on my blog! Sometimes there are so many samples that it's hard to keep track of what I've posted and what I haven't. When I saw this set, I had no idea how insanely popular it was going be! It's such a departure from Tim's usual style that it took me awhile to figure out what to do with it. However, my deadline was crazy tight so I didn't have time to mull it over long. Thankfully, I came across a piece of cardstock that I'd used to experiment with Wendy Vecchi's Archival reinker technique (see the video HERE) and thought it was perfect. I also had a bunch of Tim's new stencils to play with, so I used the Tiles pattern to add more texture with a Picket Fence dabber. I used the happy birthday sentiment from the Simple Sayings set and repeatedly stamped it on the background. After that, I added my bird with his little hat and stamped the perfect sentiment. So cute! All the supplies I used can be found at Simon Say Stamp via the links below. So....which should I do first - the news or the tag? Hmmm...I will make you wait for the surprise, I think! ;-) I have definitely been out of the loop as far as design challenges go. One of my resolutions (yes, I do make them!) for this year was to participate more. I am always inspired by the themes and the fantastic artwork that everyone comes up with. This week, over at Art Creations Friday, we were asked to create something using a vintage Coke calendar image. Since I'm still on a Steampunk bender, of course I had to find a way to 'punk it up! I took the image into a photo editing program, cropped it, and then change the color to sepia. After I printed it, I added color back to the flowers using Distress inks and a water brush. I added a stamped top hat from Oxford Impressions and a wing (also OI) that I stamped and embossed using my Vintage Tarnished Metal tech (you can tell I'm obsessed with that one, I'm sure). While it was still hot, I stamped again, adding back the wing texture, which I highlighted with black Stazon. I embellished with plenty of idea-ology gears and a little faux rust Grungeboard flower. The background is a combination of Newsprint Reveal + Faux Designer Paper techniques, both from the Technique Junkie newsletter. I used a foam stamp cut from Tim's Gadget Gears die, a flourish from his Reindeer Flight stamp set, and a text stamp from Oxford Impressions. To finish it off, I made a little ruffle using Tissue Tape. Ok....the NEWS! Yesterday, I was invited to join the extremely talented Design Team over at Inspiration Emporium. I'm sure the ink was barely dry on the offer before I screamed, "Yes!" How could I not? If you haven't before, make sure you check out this fantastic store. They have everything you could possibly need! Also make sure you check out their blog - Inspiration Journal - and meet all the other wonderful designers.
Hi all! Even though this year's CHA was three months ago, I still have quite a few cards and projects that I haven't shared! I know it's frustrating to see stamps and other products that haven't been released yet, so I like to save them until you're able to purchase the supplies when inspirations strikes. This was probably my favorite card that I created for the Stampers Anonymous booth using Tim Holtz's new stamps. This set is called Dapper and it is truly a must-have collection of images! The background of the card was created using Tim's Eroded Metallic technique (from Compendium of Curiosities III). On top of that, I used Jet Black and Potting Soil Archival inks to stamp the images. I added some of the new Dapper Design Tape and a quote from the idea-ology Small Talk stickers. The little cigar box stamp was cut from the new Dapper paper collection. Finally, I mounted it on a piece of black Kraft Core'dinations (my fave!). I think this would make a cool art journal page, or an awesome masculine birthday card or Father's Day card! After having so much fun experimenting with the techniques from The Compendium of Curiosities and following along with everyone at Studio L3, I was thrilled to hear that the challenges would continue! This week's challenge is to create a tag inspired by Tim's tag #10 from the 2008 12 Tags of Christmas. I created the background of my tag by cutting out acetate gears using my Vagabond and the Gadget Gears die. I carefully laid the gears in place and spritzed over them with my homemade shimmer mist I created using Brushed Corduroy Distress reinker and gold Perfect Pearls, which I combined in a Mini Mister bottle. After removing the masks, I inked over the gears using Weathered Wood Distress ink. For my focal point, I stamped the men from Tim's new Steampunk stamp collection on Grungeboard and embossed them using Ranger's black embossing powder. After it cooled, I trimmed around it and spritzed it with the same shimmer mist I used on the tag. Here's a tip! You know how you end up with a raw, uncolored edge when you cut something out of Grungeboard or even regular paper? I hate that! Well, the new Distress Stains work great for covering that raw edge! I used it on my stamped men and it gave the piece a nice, finished look. Finally, I stamped the 'Admit One' - also from the Steampunk set - onto the back of an Adage Ticket. To give it a little more interest, I overstamped it with the background stamp from the same set. It's attached to the tag using Tim Holtz's Tiny Attacher. Please be sure and head over to Linda's blog and check out the great artwork that is being posted. Thanks so much to this week's hostesses, Terry and Tracy!
For this week's Grungy Monday challenge (sponsored by Simon Says Stamp), we're revisiting Tim Holtz's 12 Tags of Christmas from a few weeks ago, and choosing one of the techniques to highlight. One of my favorites was the die cut metal tape technique from the Day 12. Such a fun way to use the strip dies! The base of my tag was created with the Chalked Emboss technique from the latest issue of the Technique Junkie newsletter. I thought this looked so cool when I first saw it - then I read that it was one I'd come up with a couple years ago. Changed up just a bit, it's really a fun and easy technique! After I'd colored my tag, I embossed it with the Retro Circles Texture Fade from Sizzix. I just got the new French Flight stamps from Artistic Outpost and thought they would be perfect with this background. I stamped the men on a small tag that was cut using the Sizzix Tiny Tabs and Tags die. The souvenir tag was stamped on heavy chipboard and a small ribbon (dyed using Faded Jeans Distress Stain) was added using the Idea-ology Tiny Attacher. The balloon (from Artistic Outpost's Paris Exposition collection) was stamped on chipboard and then colored with Faded Jeans Distress ink. My letters were cut using the Sizzix Vintage Market die and adhered to the bottom along with a strip of Idea-ology Tissue Tape. An Idea-ology Muse Token is attached to the top using a Trinket Pin. All of the products I used can be found at Inspiration Emporium. If you use my coupon code - stamptramp - you'll save 10% off your order! Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope you've had a great weekend. Where I live, it has been cold and miserable - I'm so ready for spring! While we wait for that to come, I thought I'd share a pretty, springlike card I made for CHA using Tim Holtz's new Perspective stamp set from Stampers Anonymous. The butterfly is the star of this set and you can see why - it's incredible! And there are so many different ways you can use it. For my card, I stamped it on Wendy Vecchi's Clearly For Art film using StazOn and then cut it out. I applied Glossy Accents to the back side and then covered it with Rock Candy Dry glitter. It's so pretty in person! The card base was made with Ranger's Watercolor Paper and various Distress Stain Sprays. I spritzed them onto a craft sheet and then dipped the paper into the mist. I love the way this group of colors blends. It always makes me happy! When it was dry, I used one of the dies from Tim's Labels set to cut a window. I stamped the sentiment onto the card and then adhered the watercolored panel on top. To finish the card, I adhered the butterfly to the card, heated it gently and then bent the wings up. I added random bits of Tissue Tape and a few embellishments and I was done! All the supplies I used can be found at Simon Says Stamp via the links below. Hi all! Today I'm sharing a card I made for CHA using Tim Holtz's new rubber stamps from Stampers Anonymous. This release was such a fun and eclectic mix and I had a blast creating with them. To create this card, I started by sponging Weathered Wood and Brushed Corduroy onto a piece of manila cardstock. I used stamps from Tim's new Correspondence, Documented, and Big Number Blocks, along with a piece of torn French text to create the background. Next, I added a boy cut from a Found Relatives card, mounted on foam dots, and a piece of Film Strip Ribbon attached with the Tiny Attacher. On the right side I stamped one of my favorite quote stamps using Jet Black Archival ink. I cut an arrow from black Kraft Core, added a chitchat sticker, and attached it to the bottom. Finally, I adhered the piece to a black Kraft Core card. The supplies I used can be found at Simon Says Stamp and Inspiration Emporium via the links below. Hi all! Today I'm sharing a couple more card I created for CHA earlier this year using Tim Holtz's new release from Stampers Anonymous. I love the style of these stamps and think they're perfect to use for Father's Day cards or any masculine card you want to create. For the card above, I created the main panel by using the winkle-free distress technique to color two panels of manila cardstock. I stamped the collage image on both pieces, then cut the silhouette of the man from the second piece and layered it onto the other stamped image, giving it a cool 3-d effect. It was then layered to a piece of black kraft core, embellished, then adhered to a corrugated panel. Super easy! For this card, I wanted to experiment with brayering ink to create a background. First, I loaded my brayer with a small amount of gesso, then rolled it onto a piece of manila cardstock. After cleaning off the brayer, I ran it through a green ink pad and brayered over the gesso. Next, I did the same thing, but with brown ink. This is a super fun way to get inky without having to think much about what you're doing! There's no right or wrong. :) After my ink was dry, I stamped the image, then embellished with the new Dapper design tape, one of the new mirrored hearts, and some twine. Another super simple and fun card to make! All the supplies I used can be found at Simon Says Stamp via the links below. When I saw that 'Hats' was the theme for Sunday Stamper, I was thrilled - I had another excuse to show off my new stamps from Artistic Outpost's London Underground collection! Inspiration Emporium has a brand new challenge for April! This month it's all about Marvelous Masks and Spectacular Stencils. I decided I would use Tim Holtz' March tag as my inspiration for a colorful triptych featuring one of my favorite stamps! I have been dying to try this idea using Tim's new Arch Frame die from Sizzix. You know how something works in your mind, but you're never quite sure what will happen when you actually try it out? Well, after a bit of experimentation, my arch triptych worked out just as I'd imagined. Here's a quick tutorial if you'd like to make one yourself! 1. Measure the opening in the die. You want the arch panels to be connected, so the score lines need to be just inside the blade. I decided 2 7/8" was perfect. 2. Score an Inkssentials giant tag every 2 7/8", cutting off at the third score line. Save the cut off piece for later. 3. Accordion fold the paper. Place on the die and cut. 4. This is what your cut piece should look like. If there is too much pressure and the crease lines cut through, try it again using a crease pad instead of a cutting plate. 5. Using Tim's instructions, color your tag. I didn't have the Metallic paints and tried to substitute Bronze Distress stain - not a good idea. I was not at all happy with this, but figured I'd make the best of it. Art is all about not giving up! Right? 6. I decided to try giving my background a little texture with embossing powders. Randomly press an Emboss It pad over the surface. Sprinkle white Antiquities and Walnut Ink embossing powders over the surface. Heat to melt. 7. This panel actually should be #6 - oops! Using the Stacked Artful Words die, cut the word artist from light chipboard. Trim just the word 'art' and adhere to panel. I used Brushed Corduroy Distress ink and various Distress Paints to color it and give it an aged look. 8. Stamp fairy girl on the center panel with Jet Black Archival ink. Stamp head, hands, and words on the scrap of manila tag. Stamp the wings on Wendy Vecchi's clear Modeling Film. Trim out hands and head and apply to stamped image (I didn't want her to have a green face!). Ink crown with Broken China Distress ink. Trim words and adhere as shown. Cut out wings and glue in place using Glossy Accents. When dry, heat and shape. 9. Cut a piece of cardstock using the Elegant Flourishes die. Using the smaller flourish as a stencil, place on right panel and dab with Brushed Corduroy Distress ink. Immediately sprinkle with silver embossing powder. Lift stencil carefully and heat embossing powder to melt. Repeat randomly on other panels. Sometimes super shiny embossing can look out of place on a vintage project, so I used my Sanding Grip to dull it down a bit. To complete the triptych, add painted embellishments as shown. Since my arches are quite a bit shorter than a tag, I didn't want to use the large plastic numbers like Tim did on his. Instead, I cut the numbers from lightweight chipboard using his Stacked Artful Words die, painted them with a Black Soot Distress dabber and then followed Tim's technique for giving them a patina effect. I love how they turned out! I also used a text stamp from one of the Stampers Anonymous Classic sets to add some interest to the background. I have a confession to make. I am now a confirmed pop-up addict. I fully blame Karen Burniston for this condition. Her 3-D Scallop Circle die whet my appetite, the 3-D Spinning Platform pulled me in deeper. Now, the Pop 'N Cuts has sealed my fate. Why make a plain card when you can make one that will blow someone's mind?! This is the first card I've made since receiving the Pop 'N Cuts dies. Oh my goodness - it's such a fun and easy system! One of the great things about it is it cuts the card base as well as the pop-up inside. For the outside of my card, I cut kraft cardstock using the Pop 'N Cuts base die without an insert. I embossed the front using Tim's Steampunk Texture Fade and then applied dabs of Frayed Burlap Distress Crackle paint. I inked over the whole thing and generally grunged it up. For the focal point, I cut the label from Karen's Sizzlits Love set out of kraft cardstock, painted it with a Pitch Black Dabber and then covered it with the new Ranger Brushed Pewter Distress Stain. When it was dry, I embossed it with Tim's Riveted Metal Texture Fade. I layered it onto a piece that I cut apart from the Pop 'N Cuts insert. It was also painted black, and then sanded. This is a birthday card for my brother, so I added a 50 cut from metal-covered chipboard that was first embossed using the Dot-Matrix Texture Fade. To give it a distressed look, I added lots of different alcohol inks and sanded it here and there. The bottom was tied with the new idea-ology Paper Twine. I added a little tag that I cut from kraft cardstock using the tag die, also from Karen's Sizzlits Love set. The letters (his initials) were cut from kraft using the Alphabetical die. The whole thing was covered with Pitch Black Distress paint and then sanded off. Here is the view when open. How cool is that pop-up?! I love that the insert is also a Movers and Shapers die. That means I can use any of Karen's Movers and Shapers magnetic dies and I can also use any of my Tim Holtz Alterations Movers and Shapers dies too. That makes customizing your card so much fun! For the insert, I first painted kraft cardstock (yes, I do use a LOT of kraft!) with Pitch Black Dabber paint. When it was dry I covered it with the Brushed Pewter Distress Stain and then embossed it with Tim's Riveted Metal Texture Fade and sanded. I use the black dabber to add swipes of paint here and there. I had done this technique for one of my CHA Stampers Anonymous card using black cardstock, but I was out. I decided to play around using black paint instead and see if it would work. I did photograph my steps for a future tutorial if you'd like one! Ooooh, my favorite part! I used Tim's Mini Gear die to cut out the center of the pop-up. Using the same die, I cut out a gear from chipboard and painted it with gold and black Dabbers. I added a piece of acetate behind the opening and then reinserted the die cut. I added more gears to the pop-up, along with a bunch of idea-ology bits and pieces. Fun! The Happy Birthday was created in the same way as the tag on the front. This time I backed the letters with a piece of kraft cut using the Tattered Banners die. Forgive me if I use this technique on just about everything from now on! Karen has a fantastic video that explains and show the amazing versatility of the Pop 'N Cuts system. I highly recommend it! Hi all! Last year I was thrilled to be asked to join in the Ranger Designer Challenge. It was always a dream of mine to have that honor! The challenge product was the new Distress Paint collection that was released at the show. At the time, I was pretty much in mad love with Tim Holtz's Jumbo Tattered Florals die from Sizzix and decided to use the paints to create some pretty, yet grungy, metal flowers. This piece was definitely a challenge for me and I was a little unsure of it when it was finished. I was in such a rush to finish it that I only had a chance to take this quick pic before I wrapped it up and shipped it off, hoping that it would show my love of the paints and measure up to the talent I knew I would be surrounded by at CHA. So, imagine my surprise when I got an email from Somerset Studio saying they were going to use it in an article featuring a selection of the challenge canvases! I was beyond thrilled. It's a fantastic article and so inspiring to see how each artist interpreted the theme. This issue will be on newsstands July 1st and I highly recommend you grab a copy. A friend of mine pointed out that the magazine had also used a portion of my canvas to create one of their free Artists' Papers. How cool is that?! They did a wonderful job with it too - the paper is beautiful. Okay, now for the winner of the new Mini Distress Inks! Comment #1 was from Bearcrazyman who said: bearcrazymanJune 16, 2014 at 10:37 AM Very cool thanks for the chance to win Congratulations, Bear! I will be contacting you for your mailing info so I can get these little cuties to you asap! I plan to do a tutorial soon for these painted metal flowers, but in the meantime, you can find the products I used to create them from Inspiration Emporium via the links below. Hi all! I have been having a lot of fun in the studio lately playing with some new products and I have a very cool project to share with you! A couple of months ago, Els from Elizabeth Craft Designs was kind enough to send me a set of her new jewelry dies. Of course, my first thought was, 'what can I cut with these?!' They are wafer thin dies, but I really wanted to see if they would cut aluminum flashing. I was shocked when they cut it like it was butter! I set the dog tags aside and got distracted with something else (typical). Last week Wendy Vecchi sent me a selection of her embossing powders (it was like Christmas!) and a little light bulb went off. My first experiment yielded a cool necklace (which I'll post soon). After that, I was inspired to try combining techniques and came up with what you see above. I have fallen madly in love with Tim Holtz's embossed texture paste technique from his March tag and thought it would be fun to try over the enameling. I wanted it to look like raised lettering with a rusty enamel surface behind it. Here's how it did it: Begin by cutting a dog tag from aluminum flashing (I got mine from Lowe's) using the largest dog tag die. Cover it with embossing ink. Next, sprinkle Wendy Vecchi's Orange Blossom embossing powder over the tag, making sure to leave a few areas open. Add random sprinkles of Watering Can embossing powder over the tag. Tap off excess and use a heat gun to melt the powders. Make sure you're working on a non-stick craft sheet and be careful - the metal gets very hot! Let tag cool before proceeding to the next step. Using Tim Holtz's embossed texture paste technique, apply Wendy's silver embossing paste over the top of the embossed tag. While the paste is still wet, cover with silver embossing power. Tap off excess and allow paste to dry completely. When paste is try, heat to melt the embossing powder. SO cool! Adhere gears to the tag using Tiny Fasteners. After I'd added the gears, I decided I wanted a little more texture, so I reheated the tag and sprinkled Vintage Photo Distress embossing powder in random spots. I love how grungy it looks after adding it. To create a necklace, add a jump ring and ball chain and you're set! If you want to give the back a finished look, you can add another layer of flashing, or a piece of cardstock or felt. I left mine as is because I'm a bit lazy. ;) If you didn't want to wear this, you could use it on a card, in a mixed media piece...pretty much anywhere! How cool is that embossing powder? I've been intrigued by torch enameling lately and think this gives a similar look, but is much easier. I can't wait to experiment even more! The dies I used can be found at Elizabeth Craft Designs. The Dog Tag set is only $8.75 and you get three sizes of dies - I think that's an incredible deal! The rest of the products can be found at Simon Says Stamp. I also added a link to flashing on Amazon in case you can't find it at your local hardware store. It's quite inexpensive for the amount you get. You'll never run out of that stuff! Hi all! I'm back today with another amazing new die from Karen Burniston's Winter 2018 release. This one might just be my favorite (today at least!). It's the Cake Pop-Up die and it is definitely a show-stopper! I chose an older collection from Graphic 45 for this card. I have been hoarding this paper and it's absolutely perfect for this pop-up die. I kept the front fairly simple since I didn't want any bulk to keep the card from lying flat when opened. I added a decorative clip, which actually serves a dual purpose. On the front it's a pretty embellishment... And on the inside it helps to hold the card open for display. And seriously, who wouldn't want to display this?! The Cake Pop-Up die looks so complicated, but is one of the easiest of Karen's dies to assemble (you can find her assembly video here). I cut each tier with a different paper to give it more interest. The top tier has a little tab so that you can glue candles, etc onto the top. Here, I added fussy cut flowers and a banner for maximum 'wow' factor. I added a few more fussy cut details to the back of the cake, making sure that it could still move freely when opening and closing. Great news! Karen's new collection is shipping tomorrow, February 1st! You can shop for this die and all the other incredible dies from the release via the links below. Have fun! Be sure and follow me on Instagram for videos of this card (and others) in action! There's nothing quite like a video for showing how amazing these cards really are. Thanks so much for stopping by today - have a great day!
