This view show the scanty pieces of a vintage Van Ryper model (ALCOA PILGRIM) that I was commissioned to repair. Much detail was lost and had to be carefully researched and replaced.
Hello all - Welcome to those of you who followed my build log of my previous ocean liner, the SS Andrea Doria. If you have not seen it, you can reach it by clicking the link below my profile, below. Many parts were missing from this piece and had to be studied and evaluated before further proceeding with the restoration. References were acquired from the South Street Seaport Collection in New York City and from online photo images displayed by Scherbak Ship Models.
As both professional artist and builder, it is a privilege to research and replicate another's work to get a 'hands-on' about the person's journey - werewith to learn his methods and applications. Here, in the studio, I'm working on a contemporary miniature of Van Ryper's Vineyard Haven ferry S.S. Islander...a work exacting to the original. Though it's an honor to restore his work, it is an equal honor to acquire a request to duplicate (at least one) due to the rarity of this particular vessel. However, it is not my recommendation to copy another when we have our own personal gifts.

Many of Charles Van Ryper models were small, intricate pieces, yet sturdy and simplistic in detail. His work was deemed as 'Deco-Art' by his contemporaries when he established his shipmodel business in 1933. Nearly 80 years later, I was introduced to this noted builder's work by Cape Cod Collectors and began the task of preserving his work through restoration. Here, in this photo, is shown a badly damaged model of Van Ryper's military T2 Tanker, one of the classes that served American naval forces in WW II.
