If you were a manufacturer of low-volume Italian sports cars in the 1950s, then you would have been fairly spoiled for choice when it came to choosing an engine to power your creation. Choosing something from Fiat would seem to be an obvious choice. Choosing an engine from the humble Crosley would be less so....

Tuned by Siata to make 125 horsepower or more, the Siata 208S, in both Coupe and Spider, achieved exceptional performance and a degree of aesthetic presence that is unprecedented in the early Fifties. Their design – leaning forward in a pose that recalls the photographs of early racing cars and taken by cameras with focal plane shutters – is aggressive, potent, sleek and elegant. In the finest tradition of great coachbuilding and sports car design, the appearance of the Siata 208S was matched by its performance.

Abarth 205 Vignale Berlinetta - Chassis: 205012 - 2011 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este
Siata (Societa Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori) began in the 1920s as a tuning company making parts for Fiats, but progressed to making cars in the 1930s. The 400F used Fiats superb 2-litre V8 engine with twin Weber carburettors, producing 125bhp. With its engine designed by Dante Giacosa, and chassis by Rudolf Hruska, it wore an ultra-low "berlinetta" body styled by young designer Giovanni Michelotti for Stabilimenti Farina and built by Balbo. It is believed that less than 10 berlinettas were built, along with around 25 convertibles, one of which was bought by Steve McQeen. Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011

1952 Siata 208CS Using Fiat’s Otto Vù engine and chassis with a unique coupe body, this was Siata’s answer to events like the Mille Miglia. Before the 208CS, Societa Italianà Applicazioni Techniche Automobilistiche had built up quite a reputation building racing parts for Fiat and even making whole new cars from Fiat components. When Fiat’s, Otto Vù (8V) came it was a natural choice for a Siata’s new car. Fiat used Siata to help develop the Otto Vù prototypes. They […]
