A baby's first cold is scary and hard. I put together 10 must-haves to keep in your "sick kit" for when your baby gets a cold...
My first baby was a sicky baby. He didn’t have reflux (although he did have colic) he was just sick on a far too regular basis. It varied between just a bit of “spit up” (what a lovely phrase that is!) to full blown projectile vomiting across the room. As he was my first baby,
It’s the season for sick kids. UGH! My kids have been sick off and on for about a week now. They are both in elementary school so I know viruses go around but I want to help them feel better too! They’ll have a fever for a day, be fine the next, then have a fever again and coughing & runny
The baby boogers. Of all things that are absolutely adorable when you have a baby, the boogers are not. They are the first sign of a cold, and usually the last symptom to leave. Which sometimes means weeks of nasal congestion. Why are babies so boogery? Doesn’t it seem like babies and toddlers produce an inordinate amount of mucus? The main reason babies and toddlers seem to have excessive mucus is because they cannot blow their noses or clear it into their throat effectively like adults can. Most children also experience the majority of their colds within the first few years of their life. (On average 7-10 colds per year!) This means that many babies and toddlers experience weeks of nasal congestion followed by…weeks of nasal congestion. Newborns and small infants have different reasons for nasal congestion. In the first few days of life newborns may sound congested as they continue to clear amniotic fluid out of their sinuses and nasal passages. Even after the first few days many young infants continue to sound congested. Dry air or irritants like cigarette smoke or smog can cause irritation to lining inside the nasal passages leading to congestion. Some babies even sound congested without any irritants – their nasal passages are simply so tiny that any fluid that builds up normally just doesn’t have a chance to escape. Most babies will grow out of this on their own. Most websites and baby care books recommend saline drops up the nose to help clear mucus. But did you know there is a super simple, wonderful substitute for saline drops? Breastmilk up the nose I’m serious. It works wonders. Breastmilk is already buffered, just like saline, so it won’t burn if you put it up the nose. It works just as well as saline to break up mucus too! Breastmilk also has wonderful antiviral constituents, including monolaurin and lactoferrin (in addition to vitamin A and other awesome nutrients). That means that your baby will get his nose washed out by a solution that can naturally combat the virus directly. The best part about breastmilk (at least for breastfeeding moms)...

Feeding A Sick Toddler It feels like we are in the thick of cold season and most kids end up getting sick during the colder weather. When your little one is fighting a cold, food is usually the last thing on their mind. I always used to stress out about my son not eating but time has taught me that it's ok and completely normal! Children often lose their appetite when they are sick but will always make up for it after! I aim to implement the following and find this works best to help him build up his strength. 1. HYDRATION This is the most important! Encourage them to drink as much as possible and offer hydrating fruits and veggies such as cucumber, watermelon, courgette, celery, strawberries, pineapples and peaches. 2. Serve honey Honey contains high antibacterial properties and antimicrobial compounds to suppress coughs and it also boosts the immune system. In the UK, the NHS (national health service) now actually recommend honey for coughs. It is important to note that honey is not suitable for under 1’s. 3. Add healing spices to smoothies and meals/snacksTurmeric is one of the best known spices for fighting colds and can be added to smoothies or cooking. Ginger is superb for inflammation and I usually add a little extra when my son is unwell or recovering from a cold. It can also work well in smoothies! Garlic is naturally immune boosting and has been used to help fight colds for centuries and again can be added to most meals. 4. Load up on Vitamin C Traditionally oranges always come to mind, however broccoli, bell peppers and strawberries are also a superb source of vitamin C. 5. Healthy Fat Where possible add in high calorie, good fats to maximise every mouthful. 6. Protein Add protein where possible, this can be in the form of crushed nuts and seeds sprinkled over food or added to smoothies. Note: no whole nuts or seeds for under 5’s. Disclaimer: This post is not intended to replace medical advice. If you are concerned your child is unwell or dehydrated seek medical as soon as possible. ⠀⠀ Sick Toddler Recipes Here are my go to recipes that I turn to time and time again when my son is feeling unwell. 1. Turmeric milk Turmeric Milk (traditionally known as haldi doodh) is an ancient Ayurvedic drink that's known for it's anti-inflammatory properties. It is a delicious, comforting and nourishing drink that comes together in minutes. 2. Khichdi Khichdi is a one pot Indian dish that combines rice, lentils and healing spices into a porridge like consistency. Highly revered in Ayurvedic medicine, it is the perfect meal for when one is feeling poorly or you just need some serious comfort food! It’s packed with protein, wholesome, nourishing ingredients and is easy to digest. 3. Immune Boosting Smoothie This anti inflammatory and immune boosting smoothie is so hydrating and packed with vitamins and nutrients. It is perfect to help defend against coughs and colds. 4. Kefir Smoothie This easy, good for your gut smoothie is so simple to make and is packed with wholesome and nourishing ingredients, perfect for when your little ones have been under the weather. 5. Strawberry Milkshake Loaded with vitamin C, protein and hydrating, this smoothie is perfect for colds and coughs. 6.
