From trash to treasure! I made this for a friends wedding shower gift. Super fun! The back story: I picked up the futon-ish thing out of the trash one night. i saw the wood and figured i could certainly find a use for it. well - a year + later, light bulb! a good friend of mine is getting married at the beach this april. shes really into beach-y stuff. i was looking at her registry and blam-o. something popped into my head. i have always wanted to make one of these signs for myself. i first saw a cool one in bonaire at a fun little beach spot that an ex-pat with a monkey on his shoulder-turned impromptu tour guide took us to. long story there, but back to the project. anyway, so i decided to try cutting the boards myself with a hacksaw - UGH. so i took the boards over to my husbands work space and had his business partner cut them for me. 5 mins later, 9 boards became 18 directional signs:) sweet. i took them home, bleached them up (they had molded ever so slightly in my storeroom:( in the year i had them). i stained them with your standard dark walnut finish and let them dry in the sun for a few days. i then "painted" them with a thin coat of colorful acrylic using a foam brush. i wanted them to look a little weathered. i then cleared them with an aerosol satin clear. i let them cure for about a week prior to working up the balls to do the lettering. well in the meantime, spring happened early here in florida and i got the allergies. so in a bit of haze, i started painting the signs. i worked on them over three nights in between naps and hot showers. finally, two days before D Day = the wedding shower, i figured i'd better get my butt in gear. i had an old, circular concrete block around that i filled with ready-mix concrete and set the post. o - i think the post was a 2x4x8? that i had also stained dark walnut. PS: setting a 6' plus stick upright was a bit of a bear. i didnt mind if it came out crooked as i figured it would add to the ambiance, but STILL, not an easy task. anyway, i let that dry over night. the following day, i decided to darken the post with some black spray paint, followed by a satin clear coat. i also cleared the signs at this time with about 3 coats of the toxic stuff (luckily the husband brought home his pro-respirator to save my already ailing lungs). i allowed them to dry for a bit, and decided it was time to affix the signs. i must say, im still not so sure about the alternating bit of the their placement, but whatevs. i used some coated nails i had, two in each sign so they wouldn.t slide around. for the hell of it, i cleared the signs again and allowed to dry overnight. i also painted to base teal for some contrast with the upright. so thats that. not too difficult of a project - about three weeks in the making, thanks to florida rain, early spring and WORK (boo). the real PIA was hauling this thing to the shower, but i made it happen cap'n! thats my story, and i.m stickin' to it.
I mentioned the other day in my kitchen before and after post that I never did get around to doing much decor in that room, but that I felt like it was probably better to leave the counters open and clear anyway. I just enjoy having a kitchen that functions well and feels easy to work in more than anything else. The one exception to the no-unnecessary-decor rule could be a fun DIY painted sign and it's something that I started thinking about almost right away after I hit publish on that post and said that I was good with
