Architect Christoph Kaiser successfully Converted this 1955 corrugated steel-wall grain silo into a home in down-town Phoenix in the US. The home has a 230f² (21m²) footprint with a total 340f² (31.5m²) liveable space. When constructing homes, we are used to nice square 90 degree walls, so working off of a circular structure, posed some challenges. Keeping the design simple and with the addition of an upper floor, with a skylight, made sure that all of the essentials were able to be incorporated. More images below, including construction shots. Christoph Kaiser first decided to live in a silo when he bought one to use as a shed.“Even before I finished assembling it, I was enamored with the idea of if you can fashion something out of this unique form and small footprint that feels like home,” says the principal at Phoenix-based design firm Kaiserworks. That curiosity solidified into action, and he set out to build a grain silo home—one that he lived in for just under two years and now offers as a long-term rental.

I have a friend who lives in a beautiful non-traditional home that I thought you might be interested in. I am sure many people drive by her house and would die for a chance to go inside and look around....and how many people do you know that can say they have lived in a grain silo? Oh, and by the way, it is just down the street from the trapeze school that I told you about awhile back. If you are ever in the area, you will have to see both!! Check out her fabulous house.... They purchased the silo's from a farm in the set of three. They were transported in halves in the middle of the night to their current location. The galvanized metal was framed with 6" walls and insulated with foam. Corridors were constructed to connect the silos. Each two storied silo is about 500 square-feet of living space, so space management is very important. My friend Carolynn and her husband live in the silo on the right and her daughter and son-in-law live in the silo on the far left. The center part is the garage. The stonework and industrial lighting add charm and character and help blend the 3 units together. Over the garage is a large gathering room for various family activities. Also, a fabulous balcony. Carolyn made this darling flower box next to the front door. It is made with drawer knobs as flowers and green caulking as the stems and leaves. Notice the 3rd flower from the left....the center of the flower is her doorbell! Love this door and ladder on the side of one of the silo's. All the doors inside the silo's are reclaimed. This metal door slides open into the laundry room. Most of the other doors in the house look like this.....love it! Carolyn's living room, kitchen and dining area are in a very cozy space on the main floor. Upstairs above the living area is their bedroom with connects to the family room over the garage. Carolyn's house before this was a really cool old barn built in the early 1900's. They moved the barn board by board and brick by brick from Grinnell, Iowa to Gilbert, Arizona where it was constructed exactly the same as it was back in Grinnell.....but that's another post. Thanks Carolyn for letting me share your home with everyone! deb
