Motorbikes, scooters, tuk tuks, busses, bicycles, vans, pedestrians, trucks and the odd chicken and monkey juggle for position. Visiting Angkor Wat is more than seeing the largest religious monument in the world. It bears witness to a volcano of tourism exploding around the Cambodian UNESCO World Heritage Site. Should you have an Angkor Wat trip on your list of travel plans we hope the following will be of help to you in having an enjoyable rather than frustrating experience. In 1993 Angkor Wat saw 7650 visitors. By 2004 561,000 people passed through the gates. In 2016 2.21 million people headed for this ancient wonder. You will want to be prepared. 15 tips for visiting Angkor Wat It takes time to buy your ticket Don’t expect to arrive at a small kiosk and get your entry a few minutes later. The official ticket center for Angkor Wat has more than 25 windows and is open from 5 am – 5:30pm. We were told by our guides to bring our passports. Others report only needing photo identification. In addition your photo will be taken and then attached to your admission ticket. If you are Cambodian you do not require an admission pass. Have cash for your ticket The Angkor Wat entrance fee is 1 day $37 USD, 3 day $62 USD or 7 day $72 USD. In 2017 the prices rose significantly in an effort to decrease the number of visitors. Cash is the preferred method of payment. US dollars are the preferred currency over Cambodian Riels. Credit cards are accepted as well. A one day ticket is issued up to 5pm while tickets issued after 5pm are good for the following day. Keep your ticket in a plastic bag If it gets wet, think a rainy season visit, the photo on your Angkor Wat ticket will be quickly ruined. If you can not be identified you can not get in. I can attest that a cyclist sweating profusely can also be an issue. Truly who wouldn’t perspire like a waterfall in the heat and humidity of south-east Asia? Where is your ticket by the way? Keep your ticket for visiting Angkor Wat in a convenient location. You will be asked for this ticket outside the entrance to each temple. There is absolutely no refund for lost tickets. Get off the Angkor Wat tour track To avoid crowds try visiting the less known or popular temples in the Angkor city. Angkor Wat itself, Bayon, with its stone faces, and Ta Prohm, used in the movie Tomb Raiders, are overflowing while lesser known temples can be empty. Arrive early If you are hoping for a photo of the Angkor Wat sunrise suggestions are to arrive as early as 4:30am. By mid morning the traffic getting to the Angkor complex is intense and moves at a snail’s pace. The best photo location at Angkor Wat is in front of one of the ponds where a reflection of the iconic structure can be captured. Plan your transportation to Angkor Wat in advance Visiting Angkor Wat means a 5.5km distance from Siem Reap. Siem Reap hotels are helpful in arranging tuk tuks with or without a tour guide. Bus tours will deliver clients to the Angkor City and often return to the hotel for lunch. Cycling is not for the faint-hearted If you choose cycling as your mode of transportation to Angkor do so with extreme caution and preferably accompanied by a guide. Even with guides stopping traffic at intersections, the ride to and from Siem Reap can be hair-raising. Within the 400 acre Angkor temple complex bicycles are a great way to move about. We recommend you have a helmet, be with a guide and be aware of the traffic weaving on all sides of you. Think before you buy from children Outside each of the temples, especially the more popular ones, are endless stands and children selling everything from magnets to origami. ” One dollllaaaar” rings out continuously. Small children will tag along insisting you buy. Although heartbreaking to see we encourage you not to buy from children. The issue of children being kept from school for the purpose of selling is a complex one. One we have seen on many occasions including our trip to Peru. Is that a toilet I see? If you see a restroom/toilet use it. As one might say to children “try to go”. In our experience restrooms were not frequent sightings. Always carry your own toilet paper as you may not find any available. Bring water Even on the coolest days the combination of the heat and humidity of Cambodia with temple exploring can quickly lead to dehydration. Come equipped to explore Angkor Apply the sunscreen and wear a hat outside of the temples to protect yourself from the sun. Wearing a hat inside Angkor Wat is considered disrespectful and should be removed prior to entering. Wear a back pack to carry items such as water, sunscreen and your hat. Watch your step 12th century flooring can be rather bumpy. Wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring the Angkor kingdom. Dress appropriately when visiting Angkor Wat Following photos of semi clothed individuals at Angkor going viral on social media (what are people thinking?), clothing restrictions are strictly enforced. Shoulders must be covered as well as knees. Even tight leggings are frowned upon. Be respectful. Skip the long line If the line is long don’t wait for access to the top-level of Angkor Wat. Dave tested his patience with a 45 minute wait on a January afternoon. With the skies hazy the view was fine but not spectacular. Line up for view from the top of Angkor Wat Have you been to Angkor Wat? Any suggestions to add?
