Turn a Racing Seat Into an Office Chair: Had an old racing seat that needed a new purpose besides taking up space on top of my rusting GTO. And I didn't have a mobile chair in my garage -- just a couple of metal folding chairs. So it seemed like a good idea to mate the racing seat to an of…

IKEA’s SIGNE rugs are a bargain at $3.99 each, and are a durable (and washable) material that’s handy for tons of DIY projects. See how easy it is to take one of these simple striped flat-weave rugs and turn it into something else entirely. If you need something long, try stitching a few together to make an elongated runner. Clara (in the lead image above) also embellished hers with some felt leaves. IKEA itself suggests turning their striped goodies into floor pillows.

I have moved the big old PS Maskros into my new dining room and finished its hack. It took about 3 hours to take off all the flowers, add a coffee filter behind and a mini cupcake liner infront and reattach. My 6 year old helped me by making neat piles for an assembly line. Its super fluffy... So today I added a little extra to the centers...ping pong balls, kind of want to paint them gold or maybe even multicolored, but that is a huge undertaking... What do you think? I bought a 6 pack to test it out, now I just have to wait for the bulk pack of 144 to arrive to finish. Total makeover $$$: 1 pack of 200 white coffee filters (on sale!) $1.00 2 packs white mini cupcake liners $3.48 150 ping pong balls $24.70 a sore thumb nail from taking the original flowers off (they are on there pretty good!) $29.80 I also painted my living room white. I am stuck on a pattern for the walls. I will have a Project Hotmess update for you at the end of tomorrow! Update: I went with Rhinestones for the centers...
In January I was approached with the incredible opportunity to design a space for Atlanta's most prestigious residential showcase for designers - The Atlanta Symphony's Decorators Show House and Gardens. This terrace level bonus room was presented to IKEA Atlanta, and my managers thought that it would be a great experience to further develop me as designer, project manager, and leader. And you know what, they could not have been more right! At 26, this experience has made my young career. To quote myself in a conversation with my manager Michael, this has been "the most challenging, frustrating, exhausting, amazing, and rewarding project that I have ever been apart of! This was definitely an opportunity of a lifetime." Below are some before photos when we viewed the space for the very first time, as well as a few photos that are just a few finishing touches away from being complete. The planning took about Two-and-a-half months, the construction took about three weeks. The concept was to create a multifunctional space that blended our Swedish modern roots with the timeless, classic feeling of this 9-million-dollar mansion. We used an eclectic mix of products from our modern and traditional range, as well as a few real-life accessories from our very own homes to add depth. Overall we wanted it to feel like a beautiful place where people could actually live. You know, step outside of the context of a show house, and let visitors know that YOU CAN ACTUALLY LIVE LIKE THIS! It's functional, beautiful, and affordable. Twenty thousand dollars won't just get you a new credenza or sofa like in the other rooms in this house, it can get you a brand new, fully-furnished space... a lifestyle. Did I mention you can buy it and take it all home with you today? So enough chatting. I know you wanna see the photos! The biggest of thanks goes out to my incredible team of amazingly talented individuals for without them this space would have never been possible - Marianne, Robin, and Michael - I love you guys. In spite of everything, we did it! And it's beautiful! So to my readers, what do you think? Does it do anything to change your perception of IKEA? Of course my little photos barely do it justice! If you haven't had a chance to get out to the ASO Decorators Show House and Gardens, the last day is May 12th! The house is filled top to bottom with breath-taking architecture and gorgeous designs from some of Atlanta's most talented designers. All the proceeds help fund educational and community outreach programs for children and adults throughout the city. So get out there, support, and be inspired!

The living room wasn't supposed to get as much attention as it did before new baby came but new baby decided to be late. As I write this, he is 6 days overdue and not giving us much of a sign that he is coming. My sister came down the weekend before he was due to visit, help out, and hopefully get to meet him. He didn't show so I got lots of time to relax and get things done while Cora was very happy to be entertained by her aunt. A few days after she left my mom came down in hopes of helping out with the new baby. Instead, she also got lots and lots of time with a sweet little girl but no new baby. Cora has been as happy as can be with all of the visitors and our house is really making some progress. Here are links to past living room progress: #1: Introducing The Living Room #2: Media Center & Rug #3: Unusual Shelving And, did I hear you ask for a to-do list? You've got it! paint curtains hang artwork hang something above and around the TV get a rug new entertainment center change out the black side table move desk (temporary entertainment center) to the left of the couch and paint it turquoise get rid of the random chair change a couple of accessories try to figure out a way to hide Scott'e subwoofer maybe put some sort of book ledge above the couch and below the 3 high windows add wood around the entertainment center possibly change out the remote/coaster holder for something that matches better My mother-in-law is a curtain-making extraordinaire and she offered to make some curtains for our new house. Wooo Hooo!!! I took her up on it in a heartbeat! Our ceilings are really tall and our windows are very wide which makes the pre-made curtain choices very limited. On top of that, I am a huge fan of picking my own fabric instead of being limited to the fabric that pre-made curtains have chosen for me. I looked all over the place for the right curtain fabric for the living room and reached my final decision in... I bet you can guess it... Ikea! I went with Ikea's yellow Stockholm fabric. Here they are! I also decided to stop leaning art against the wall and go ahead and hang it up. I tried this painting first: but I ended up liking these 2 better: I put the other 2 blue paintings that I had like the ones above on top of Cora's cubby hole. My mom and I spent some time trying different ways to accessorize the big metal bookshelf and came up with this: I am sorry to say that a lot of the books that are displayed are displayed because I liked the way they look not because I am wild about the books. Sad sad, I know. All of the books that I need to access frequently are in my bookcase downstairs, in my bedside table or in Cora's bookcase. The rest are hidden in boxes under our couch. Some books that I obviously need constant access to are my "I Love Lucy" book and a bound copy of my Granddad's dissertation about Quantum Physics. Check out this awesome painting that our friend and Realtor gave us of our old house. We love it! In fact, we love it so much that it got to be surrounded by old dinosaur pinatas! We also addressed a much-help-needed speaker situation. Scott bought a big subwoofer a few years ago. As you may imagine, it did not make me all that happy. I'm into pretty decoration, not big ugly black boxes. I have been trying to come up with a way to hide it and still be able to use it. This is the best I have so far. It is a thousand times better but still not great. Speaker Situation BEFORE: Do you see that big mess of cords and blackness? That's the speaker situation. Speaker Situation AFTER: It is hiding between the wall and the media center. Has anyone ever wondered about the random black pillow? I feel like giving it a little mention today. This was a Scott purchase. I think it was before I hit the scene but it wasn't long before. The pillow cracks me up. There are pictures of random things. The names of the objects are written at the bottom of the picture and then translated into Spanish. I think "The Musician. El Musico" is my favorite! Here are some more photos of the finished product: Yay! I am really happy about how it is all coming together!
