Gary Bunt’s work is inspired by British artists, especially painters of the Bloomsbury and St. Ives groups, and he has extensive knowledge of them and their work. It is, however, his own distinctive style that his collectors and admirers have fallen in love with and his paintings feature in collections across the world. The Sussex landscape provides regular inspiration for Gary’s work. He is always happiest when painting in ‘the shed’ (his studio). Gary is represented by the Portland Gallery.
‘‘Those are good pigs,’ he said, ‘aren’t they?’ If he had said they were bad pigs I should have agreed with him equally. Their shape meant nothing to me. ‘Good length,’ he explained, ‘broad in the back and not too much head.’ I strove to see it, but no person can appreciate the points of a pig till he has dwelt long with them. Looking back, I cannot tell at what point I began to know a good pig from a bad one. The farmer’s eye is as subtle as the artist’s.’ Adrian Bell, Corduroy

‘Tennyson takes you by the hand and gently leads you ... on to Blythburgh, where the ‘loneliest church in Suffolk’ stands on a ‘knoll beside the river [Blyth] in the midst of a great ocean of marsh and heath, brooding graciously over the few cottages that are the pitiable relics of a once wealthy port ... sublime and dramatic’.’ Branwen Lucas on Julian Tennyson’s ‘Suffolk Scene’. Julian, a great grandson of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, hoped to become a writer but was sadly killed in action in 1945.
Bemerton Rectory was the home of the poet George Herbert from 1630 until his death in 1633. When the novelist and poet Vikram Seth visited the house, he loved it so much he ended up buying it himself. Howard Phipps studied painting and printmaking at the Gloucestershire College of Art. He is probably best known for his drawings and engravings of the chalk downs of Wiltshire and Dorset. Howard was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1985.
