Well, let me be the one to officially say it 'Christmas is ONE WEEK AWAY!!' and if any of you are like me, you still feel like there is a mass of work left to be done. What with the last minute decorating, the baking, thefinding of the perfect gift, and just the general organization and clean-up that is required to host 20 of your closest relatives (lucky for me, this last one is not something I have to worry about this year.. whew!) Well, if any of the last minute things you need to do, fall into the category of last minute decorating or finding the perfect gift, then I think this project may be just what you are looking for. :) As I mentioned last week when I shared my Peanut Butter Reindeer Cookies, my mom was here visiting recently and one of the projects that she wanted to do with the kiddos happened to be these amazingly simple and cute DIY Sock Snowmen. She found this idea online and wasn't able to remember exactly where she found it from, so if you were the inspiration behind these little guys, Thank You! As I mentioned before, these guys are soo easy to do. No sewing required, as long as you can cut and can find your way around a glue gun, you can have a few of these guys finished in under 15 minutes each. Can't Get Started Without: ~glue gun and glue sticks ~white crew socks (the kind that have white toes and heels, I found mine at Wal-Mart) ~another variety of sock (design, colour combo is completely up to you) ~orange pipe cleaner ~small black beads ~scissors ~white pom poms ~buttons (again colour, size and shape are up to you) ~rice ~elastic bands ~any other seasonal knick-knacks and craft supplies you have laying around The more miscellaneous stuff you can find, the more fun you can have with decorating your snowmen. Step 1: Cut your crew sock about half an inch from the heel of the sock. Step 2: Turn your sock inside out and tie with an elastic an inch from cut end, then turn it back right side out. Step 3: Fill a glass full of rice and place the sock over the cup. Then, turn your cup upside down and fill your sock with rice. (Without the glass, this can be a VERY messy step, so please, please use the glass. You'll thank me later!) Make sure not to overfill your sock. While you will get a fatter snowman, the sock will stretch so much that the rice will 'leak' out of the little holes created. Step 4: Using another elastic band, tie off the sock about a half inch from the open end. Then, take another elastic and tie it around the middle of your snowman, giving it a head and a body. Step 5: Cut the toe off your other sock about 3 inches down, and place it on your snowman's head creating a hat. You can roll up the end of your sock to create a brim. Step 6: Using the same sock as you used for your hat, cut a one inch strip from the sock. You should now have a circular piece of sock. Cut this so that you have a long strip. Step 7: Tie it around your snowman's neck and cut little strips into each end. Step 8: Take your pom poms and glue them onto the top of your hat. (You can use a many or as few as you'd like to create the size of pom pom you desire). Step 9: Glue your black beads onto your snowman giving him eyes. Step 10: Cut your orange pipe cleaner about an inch and a half long. Bend the cut piece in half and then bend out each end. Please excuse the fuzzy pic, I zoomed in a little too much..Oops Then stick it into the sock to give your snowman a nose. Your snowman is really starting to come along now. Step 11: Place two or three dabs of hot glue into the belly of your snowman, and place your buttons. And there you have it, finished, fini, finito, the end!! You now have an incredibly cute, little snowman that is guaranteed to make you say 'Awww'. As you can see I got creative here and made a few. I've decided to keep a couple for myself to put up on my mantle. The other two are going to be gifts for Miss J's teachers. What kinds of homemade gifts do you like to make for Christmas? If you decide to make any of these little guys I would LOVE to see the great ideas you come up with! Linking Up Here:

Last year I had pinned a tutorial to my Pinterest board for making these really cute sock snowmen. They were simply adorable, easy, and looked like they would make wonderful gifts for the kid's teachers. Like usual, life got busy and I found myself running to the Hallmark store for gifts. This year, I'm on top of it! Suzanne triggered my memory of last years good intentions by posting a brief tutorial on her blog. Since I'm still laid up at home, having something fun to do is a MUST! I called my sister, we went for coffee and stopped at the Dollar General and Rite Aid for supplies. I wasn't using old socks for these since they are gifts. A few friends on facebook had asked me how I made their cute little hats and scarves. I had offered to do a tutorial on them and then figured, I may as well share the entire process from start to finish. So, here goes... another Sock Snowman Tutorial. This could be the longest post I have ever written to date. Supplies you will need: Crew socks (new or old) Fabric, old clothes, ribbon, sweaters or other socks for hats and scarves Rice (only $3.00 for a 5lb bag) Scissors Rubber bands Buttons, and embellishments from your crafty stash Making the Sock Snowman Body. Cut your sock about 1/2" from below the ribbed part of the neck. This will be the body of your snowman. Tie your rubber band tightly around the top of your sock. I recommend this side because you will need to trim the other side and all that fabric is a bugger to cut. TIP: I turn my sock inside out first, then tied the rubber band on. I found it easier to get that band right up to the edge of the stitching. Now turn your sock right-side in so the rubber band is on the inside of the sock. Suzanne suggested a glass to fill your sock, and believe me, I understand why. LOL! Place your sock over a glass filled with rice. Hold on to that sock tightly and flip the glass over to fill the sock. Just jam the rice in there. It will fit. After squishing it down, it all fit. Tightly tie another rubber band to the top. Shape your rice filled sock. Yes, it will hold it's shape. Then wrap the another rubber band around the shape you made. You will also want to trim the excess material from the top of your snowman so the hat sits on well. You can use the other half of the sock as a hat and waste nothing. Use it this way, or turn it inside out for a different texture. Place the hat on top of your snowman's head. Viola! Now lets move onto the fun part... Dressing your Sock Snowman These were $1.00 at Rite Aid. You can dress 2 snowmen with one pair. Cut your sock as shown. The heal will be extra material. I'm sure I can still find another use for it. Start with the first 2 pieces. The top of the sock is perfect for the neck. It has elastic in it that fits snug around your snowman. Next, cut the next piece. Pull it through the as shown. Tie a knot. You can trim this piece if you want. Take the foot part of the sock. Fold over the open side for the brim of the hat. Place it on top of your snowman's head. Use a hot glue gun or fabric glue to attach a pom pom to the toe of the sock. I used self adhesive pearls for eyes. I ran out of black. It's an easy fix. Grab a sharpie marker to change any color pearl to black. See, it worked on the pink ones too. Be sure to let them dry so they don't smudge. Attached the eyes and start adding embellishments. These leaves were from a very old collection of Prima Flower sets. Add a few buttons. How easy was that! There is absolutely no sewing, they are totally adorable, and you get to use up lots of embellishments that you probably would have thrown away. I went back later on and hot glued a few spots on the hat to make sure they stay in place. You will also want to have a lint brush handy to remove the extra fuzzies from your snowman. Here are some more examples of ones we have made so far. I hope you have fun making your own snowman family. :) Until next time.

Hooray! After a few false starts, I am finally getting a roll as far as my crafting goes. Here's some more snowmen I have made lately. The Olafs are very popular at the moment. I have sold a few of these and the ordinary snowmen and will be gifting the rest to a charity that's close to my heart: The Illawarra Cancer Carers. These wonderful craft ladies were the reason why I didn't completely lose my sanity on the long road to health after my cancer diagnosis. I even started to get serious and had a production line sort of set up going. It certainly makes it faster when you are doing half a dozen of similar jobs at the same time. These snowmen are really starting to come together quickly. I have even been asked to show & teach a small group of ladies at a local craft group. I haven't taught crafts for years. It is great to be asked again. I wanted at least one of my snowmen to have a hat and so I played around with my felt and made my own little felt hats. I also played with the idea of making a sock angel and though my first angel looks a tad startled, (I was aiming for a singing angel) I am quite pleased with how she turned out too. I will certainly be making more angels but hopefully not quite so startled! LOL. I hope you enjoy looking and maybe even become inspired to make some for your loved ones or for charity. Christmas is only a couple of months away. Have you started making any Christmas crafts yet?
There's something magical about making your own silly sock snowman... they're cute, funny and always unique! This Christmas craft gift idea is fun for the whole family.
