Just completed my newest piece, Area: X. This piece was inspired by The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer.… by clifffranksart
"Debería haber sentido algo. Aquel cruce debería haberme conmovido o asqueado. 18 Eur. Sentimiento* Recomendable para enemigos Valoración Obtenido en Intercambio
Inside cover for Authority, book 2 of Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach Trilogy. Due out in May.
Upon retirement, Joe Herring—a successful healthcare industry entrepreneur and former CEO—dreamed of designing and building a river home. So in 2015, he purchased three secluded acres on the May River, a peaceful tidal tributary that flows amidst the preserve of Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. He wanted his home to be inspired by the French Colonial architecture of Parlange Plantation House, a 1754 National Historic Landmark in New Roads, Louisiana’s Pointe Coupee Parish. Pointe Coupee would soon become the name of Herring’s new home—a place intended as a nearby retreat from his lovingly restored 1857 city dwelling situated on Forsyth Park in Savannah’s Historic District.
Classic Southern homes share the characteristics of the people who live within them. They're inviting, hospitable, warm, and full of charm and personality.
Wiley Wallace‘s meticulous canvases depict a peculiar universe in which fantastical things happen, usually in nature with kids involved. They suggest an unholy mashup of Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy and Jeff Nichols’ 2016 movie Midnight Special. (Why Wiley’s work reminds of works by people named “Jeff” is as yet not clear to me.) Wallace’s art is what you’d get if you tried to create a Spielbergian “kids in peril” classic on mescaline. Interestingly, Wallace says that he uses his own children as models for the characters in his paintings. A press release states that “at times realistic depictions deliquesce into abstract blurs of bright colors, while at others subtle apparitions make their way into otherwise unassuming everyday scenes.” Yeah, they “deliquesce”...... At any rate, I hereby nominate Wallace to be given the contract for the key art of Stranger Things season 3. (Season 2 of Stranger Things starts in just a few weeks, by the way.) via Hi-Fructose
Southerners know that sometimes there's just no other way to get your point across. Here are some favorite Southern phrases and sayings.
Sitting on a level block in the LA foothills, this single-storey stunner is so open to its lush garden that it’s easy to forget the movie-star view at one end.
