Zellige tiles or zellij is an ancestral north African art. The tradition has been treasured from one generation to another and today only very skilled craftsmen can achieve these complex geometric mosaics works. Ideal for wall and floor coverings, but also for fireplaces, fountains or even swimming pools, Moroccan tile has inspired many architects and designers to create custom original works.Zellige has been made in Morocco for over a 1000 years. Finding the highest quality clay is extremely important to produce the finest Zellige tile. The region of Fez has one of the best quality clays in Morocco. The clay is soaked in water until it reaches a soft texture. Once the clay is soft enough to handle it is filtered by hand. After filtering, a skilled craftsmen flattens the clay by hand into squares. This part is very important because the clay must be compact with no air bubbles in it.Raw Zellige clay tiles are then allowed to dry outdoors, like adobe. Most tile production takes place in the summer, early fall and spring. After the clay is shaped, molded and flattened, it is kept and stored in a cool dry place to be readied for a first bake. After the uncured Zellige tiles are dried another skilled craftsmen applies the colors to the top of the tile. Be aware that today in Morocco many tile factories use paint guns to apply colors. Using spray guns provides the same looking tiles and many more colors are available with a lower cost. The reason we don't buy spray painted tiles it is to ensure that the paint coating is thick and resistant. The Zellige tiles are now placed in natural, wood fired kilns. In traditional moroccan Zellige kilns heat circulates unevenly, resulting in slightly different tones and colors for each tile. This imperfection makes Moroccan tiles so unique and beautiful. The end product is a 4"x4" tile with uneven edges.Note: All our tiles are 100% hand made. Our factory uses the same techniques as our ancestors to ensure quality and authenticity.Zellige making is considered an art in and of itself. This art is transmitted from generation to generation by master craftsmen. There are three craftsmen needed for Zellige. The first selects the tiles and then draws the shape desired and passes the tile to the next craftsmen. The most important part of this entire process is the third craftsmen, also called the master craftsmen. He specializes in cutting the excess clay and performs precision cutting. The end results are an incredible variety of shaped pieces that are assembled to create intricate Zellige patterns. The possibilities are unlimited!
I promised I would show you what I made with the leftovers from my Bow Tie Quilt... Well, I actually made TWO quilts. But today I am sharing just one of them (don't worry I'll share the second one soon). The first quilt from the leftovers was a scrappy 9-Patch and Snowball quilt! Two blocks, in my opinion, where you never can go wrong! In fact, this combination of blocks creates a classic pattern you've probably seen before. They make a fun secondary pattern together, too! This is a great pattern to help you use up scraps! I used 4" (cut) squares for the 9-Patch squares and the bright Snowball corners. The large, white Snowball squares were cut at 11". But really, with some simple math, you could adjust this pattern to work with any size squares! I just so happened to have 4" squares left over from my Bow Tie quilt. I mocked up this version in EQ7 to show you the entire layout. I did a 5 x 7 block layout to keep the symmetry, but with that came a slightly long, skinny quilt. Mine finished at 52" x 73". Normally I think a good proportion is about a 12" - 15" difference. If you aren't a fan of the long, skinny look, another option would be to make it square. I personally am perfectly fine with square quilts, but I know some people aren't. And since I was making this just for fun (and was planning on selling it), I decided to keep it rectangular. I found a pink Riley Blake floral for the back and a turquoise gingham for the binding. I didn't show many pictures of this quilt on Instagram because unfortunately there was an issue with the long-arm quilting. You probably can't tell from these photos since I tried to hide the parts that were really bad, although now I'm wishing I would've taken some pictures of those parts to show you! But basically, I used a new-to-me long-arm quilting company and I think this was the first time they used this orange peel design and they had a hard time lining up the design. There was a lot of overlapping and such. I felt bad (and I know they felt really bad) but these things happen sometimes. Fortunately, they made it right in the end, which I appreciated. I ended up selling the quilt (with a huge discount) to a photographer wanting to use it as a photo prop. And obviously, I told her ahead of time what the situation was. Overall, I still think this quilt turned out cute. After washing and drying it, the owner may not notice all the imperfections in the quilting. I love the fabrics and the design, and orange peel quilting is always a favorite of mine! Maybe I'll make another one someday. I definitely have lots of squares that need to be put to good use. Have you ever had a long-arm quilting "mishap"? I am thinking about putting together a blog post with some advice to long-arm quilters from their customers. Over the 20 years that I've been quilting, I've had hundreds of quilts long-arm quilted and I've learned a lot. I've dealt with a few mishaps along the way and have definitely seen a difference in how different long-armers handle them. Some of them handle it wonderfully and some of them don't. I wish they all had a policy in place for how they will handle mistakes, because they are bound to happen once in a while. Please share your "mishap" stories or the advice you wish you could give your long-arm quilter below. Thanks for stopping by!

An inglenook (Modern Scots ingleneuk), or chimney corner, is a small recess that adjoins a fireplace. Inglenooks originated as a partially enclosed hearth area, appended to a larger room. The hearth was used for cooking and its enclosing alcove became a natural place for people seeking warmth to gather. With changes in building design kitchens became separate rooms, while inglenooks were retained in the living space as intimate warming places, subsidiary spaces within larger rooms. There is a substantial overhead open gable, a brick perimeter skirt and pillars, board and batten siding and a lovely front covered porch to be enjoyed as guests and family are greeted into the home. Unbelievably, the rear covered porch is even larger and can function as entertaining space, relaxing with family and friends or just a place to enjoy family life. The 2 car side entry garage is located at the rear of the home granting unobstructed views of the front exterior. Once you enter from the garage, there is a mudroom, the utility room, and a half bath. This Exclusive plan has approximately 2,000 square feet of living space and features three or four bedrooms and two plus bathrooms. The two secondary bedrooms are on one side of the home and a shared hall bath is nearby. The owner’s suite is beautifully arranged with coffered ceilings in the bedroom, a luxurious ensuite bath and a large walk-in closet. Between the two wings are the living and dining spaces along with a chef’s kitchen. The kitchen features a center island and separate walk-in food pantry while the dining room offers access to the rear porch. The family room is spacious with built-in shelving and a handsome fireplace designed for comfort and warmth. Upstairs is the unfinished bonus room/fourth bedroom with plenty of room for a bath and walk-in closet as well as a huge storage room. Great exterior and interior highlights are “showstoppers” for this plan.
