The Askold was constructed in Germany at Krupp's Germania yard for the Russian Imperial Navy. She was begun in August 1898, she was launched in March 1900 and entered service in 1901. She was interned in Shanghai during the latter part of the Russo-Japanese War, and afterwards was the sole Russian cruiser in Far Eastern waters. During the First World War she served in the Mediterranean, and was present at the Dardenelles actions (where British troops nicknamed her the Packet of Woodbines after a popular cigarette of the day, available in fives). She was sent to the Arctic in 1917, where her crew declared for the Bolsheviks; seized by the Royal Navy, she was put briefly into British service as the Glory IV. Returned to the Russian Government in 1921, she was sold for scrap in Germany.
