This week is Elisha telling King Ahab and the people that they have to decide: Worship God or Baal. Review: Last week we started our lessons on Elijah. God told Elijah to stay by a brook called Cherith. God sent ravens with meat and bread in the morning and the evening for Elijah to eat. When the brook didn't have water anymore, God told Elijah to go find a widow by the city gates. Elijah found her and he asked her to feed him. She said told Elijah that there was only enough to make one loaf of bread, but Elijah told the widow that there would be enough for all of them. That was a miracle, and when the widow's son died, Elijah (and God) brought him back to life again. That was another miracle! Lesson found in 1 Kings 18: After three years, God told Elijah to go see Ahab. God also told Elijah that there would be rain again. King Ahab saw Elijah and said Elijah is trouble in Israel, but Elijah replied that King Ahab was the one causing trouble! He and his father has been worshipping Baal, and not God! Elijah told King Ahab to pick either God or Baal to worship. He couldn’t worship both. Elijah said “I am the only prophet for God, but Baal has 450 prophets. Elijah told King Ahab to gather all the people of Israel and meet at Mount Carmel. Elijah told King Ahab to bring the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah. (Another idol) Elijah asked the people, "How long are you going to be undecided? You can't worship God and Baal! You have to pick who you will worship!" But the people wouldn't answer Elijah. Elijah said he was the only prophet for God and Baal had 450 prophets. Elijah suggested that they each take a bull, cut it up into pieces and lay it on the wood, without a fire under it. You can call your gods to light the fire and then I will call my God. King Ahab did what Elijah suggested, and Elijah told them to go first. They prepared the bull on the wood but didn't start the fire. They called out to Baal from morning until noon. No answer! No fire! Elijah mocked them and told them “Maybe your god is sleeping or busy or something. Shout out louder!” They called louder for Baal to start the fire and they cut themselves. They kept calling for Baal to start the fire until the evening, but still no fire. Nothing happened! Finally, Elijah told the people to come stand by him. Elijah took 12 stones, to represent the 12 Tribes and built an altar. Download a poster here. Elijah made a trench around the altar, added the wood and put the cut-up bull on it. Elijah said to fill four water pots full of water and to pour it on the sacrifice and on the wood. Elijah had them pour four pots of water on it three times. Water ran down all over the altar and filled the trench! Elijah called to God and said "Let it be known to the people today that You are the God in Israel and that I am Your prophet! Hear me, God and let the people know that You are the Lord God that they need to worship!" When Elijah called to God to start the fire, the fire burned up the sacrifice along with the wood, the stones and even the water in the trench! The people believed in God. They fell on their faces and said, "The Lord, He is God!" God sent a cloud, and the drought was over! The sky went dark, and God sent clouds with heavy winds and rain. I had the above altar set up on the table while we talked about Baal, then as I talked about Elijah setting up the altar, I stacked up the 12 rocks I had to make another altar. They seemed to like this visual, and they were all counting to make sure I had 12! When we were done with the lesson, I spread out the rocks and let them pick one and they wrote The Lord is God with the scripture from today's Bible verse. They love rocks and were asking if they could have one before we were finished! This is a good worksheet to add to the thoughts of the lesson, if you have time. If you wanted to, you could just print one to use for the discussion, even though, I printed one for everyone so they could make big X's and circle the pictures! Click here to print it. This is being used with each of the Elijah and Elisha lessons. Bible Verse: 1 Kings 18:39 Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson. Used by permission.
Our NEW LESSON for this week is about the prophet JEREMIAH!!! I LOVE Jeremiah. He is a WONDERFUL EXAMPLE for all of us---but, especially for young people!! I am excited about teaching this LESSON. I love how the KIDDOS seem to connect with the YOUNG people in the Bible. They seem so excited when they find out that YOUNG people can and did do GREAT THINGS for GOD!!! This is our Do You Know Wall? I feel if the KIDDOS can answer these questions they UNDERSTAND what they have learned!! We have some NEW information on our ever growing Bulletin Board. WE have added JEREMIAH the PROPHET!!! Currently he is placed by the crown of Josiah. Remember, Josiah was KING when GOD CALLED JEREMIAH to be HIS Prophet. We have also added a PROPHET CARD to the PROPHET LINE under the Bulletin Board. We have added Jeremiah the Prophet to our GOD'S AWESOME PLAN for MAN, TIMELINE!!! The KIDDOS will have two new words to add to the WORD WALL. PUNISH and AFRAID. Although I am sure they KNOW the basic meaning to these WORDS I want to make sure they understand HOW these WORDS are important parts of this story. (Truly the KIDDOS will be able to RELATE to these two WORDS.) This weeks Memory Verse comes directly from the TEXT. It is GOD'S promise to Jeremiah. I LOVE the comfort and strength found in this verse!! If you want to hear the tune we will be singing this Memory Verse to, just click this link below. It will open up the Facebook Page for HOBT. Jeremiah 1:9 Memory Verse Tune by Ronda L. Duvall The KIDDOS will be learning this song during this lesson. I feel this is a VERY catchy song....so, hopefully they will be singing it throughout the next two weeks. :-) I hope their parents do not mind. If you would like to hear this song click on the link below. It will open up the Facebook Page for HOBT. Jeremiah Was a Young Man...by: Ronda Duvall. I would open the FB page and let it play as you read the words from this page...for some reason my video on FB is NOT very good quality. The KIDDOS will be making a Jeremiah The Prophet Puppet as their TAKE HOME project. These are made from Brown Paper Lunch Size Bags. I did draw the FACE, MOUTH, ETC. Then I Copied them onto CARD STOCK paper for stability purposes. I HOPE he looks YOUNG!! By the way, I am going to have the KIDDOS carefully WRITE the MEMORY VERSE inside Jeremiah's Mouth. I just realized I had not shown you our VISUAL. I am still using the PICTURE frame to HOLD up this weeks VISUAL. I decided to go with a POSTER style VISUAL since we are making PUPPETS. After we get the PUPPETS made, I am going to have the KIDDOS help me "RETELL" the story. OUR review game is similar to games we have played in the past....AS the KIDDOS answer a question from the story they will get to help "OPEN" Jeremiah's Mouth. To simply say it, they will remove a piece of the PUZZLE. Under the PUZZLE PIECES it reads, "I HAVE PUT MY WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH." Next week will be our REVIEW WEEK. During this CLASS time the KIDDOS will make their "EXPLORER JOURNAL" project. I know they will be EXCITED about this one! The KIDDOS will get to glue on a "BIG" 3-D hand coming out of COTTON BALL clouds and touching Jeremiah's mouth. After all the Bible tells us, "Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth..." Jeremiah 1:9a I bought the hands at the DOLLAR TREE. They were in the teacher/school supply area. They are originally pointers. However, with a gentle twist the hand popped right off. The only dilemma ---NOW, I am wondering what I am going to do with all those POINTER RODS. LOL. I hope you have enjoyed seeing what the KIDDOS will be doing during Bible Class on Sunday. I LOVE seeing how excited they get---WE WANT THEM EXCITED!!!! After all, they are learning LIFE CHANGING and SOUL SAVING Lessons. Blessings, Ronda

I'm beginning here a project I've been thinking about since last year, when I found the BOYS' LIFE "Wayback Machine" website, which has every page of every issue posted online. At the time, I was thirlled to be able to finally read the entire run of Al Stenzel's SPACE CONQUERORS! after more than 40 years. I managed to figure out how to download from their site (which wasn't easy!). The next step was cleaning up the images and then re-posting them here. This not only improves the look of the images, but just as important, makes it much easier to read them! Back when I had a one-year subscription to BOYS' LIFE, my favorite part of the magazine was, naturally, the color comics section. And, so typical of my own personal tastes, what grabbed me the most was the future, and the past. As for the latter, I guess growing up Catholic, going to a Catholic church for 30 years, and going to a private Catholic school for 4 years gave me an interest in Bible stories. While I've never done much reading of the book itself, I've long been a sucker for Biblical movies-- and comics. I just spent the last several days thumbing thru several years' worth of the magazine, to make sure I could start this project from the BEGINNING... enjoy! Story by Al Stenzel / Art by CREIG FLESSEL BOYS' LIFE / September 1952 BOYS' LIFE / October 1952 After a rousing start, there were no installments in the November or December issues. But the series would return in January. One thing that's immediately obvious... this series does NOT follow in any chronological sequence. I could probably "fix" that... but this is going to take long enough without doing that! Go to Professor H Revisits The Bible to read all the stories in order!
(Continued from 1954) As might be expected, the story of "Moses" continues, including "The Ten Commandments"! Also covered this year, "Joshua and the Fall of Jericho", "Samson", and once again, "David and Goliath". In addition, there's the stories of "David and Saul", "Solomon", 3 stories about the prophet "Elijah", and finally, the story of "Mattathias", and "The Maccabees". Despite being a lifelong church-goer, I've never been a heavy reader of The Bible, and these last 4 installments were all mostly unknown to me. It's no doubt one reason I tend to appreciate movies or comics that have adapted Bible stories. This is a really fun Sunday School Bible Review Game to learn about the Good and Bad Kings of the Bible with kindergarten, first grade, and 2nd grade kids.
If you have been following my blogs, you know that I have been struggling with being an ocean away from my family, friends and comfort zone. I thought, along with many others, that moving to German…

For our memories for the lessons on David, we used our die cut machine to make images. You could use a die cut machine, find these items or use clip art for these memories. Lesson One: a sheep Lesson Two: a crown Lesson Three: a robe or an arrow Lesson Four: a cane (we used a "j" and turned it upside down) We also took pictures in the role play center and created paper bag scrapbooks for each child to take home on Wednesday night. Again, we took Wednesday's picture on Tuesday to create less of a hassle on Wednesday night. Each child was given a king's robe on Wednesday night as well. We took purple tshirts (sizes youth M for most). We cut the shirts down the middle and sewed quilt batting down the middle of both sides (see picture). We took other decorations and added them to the sleeves to make it more "kingly."
I have a new Minute To Win It game. It's a New Testament version. Just click on the picture to check it out. In Seminary this year we are studying the Old Testament. For our Christmas party I thought that it would be fun to have a review of the year so far with Minute to Win it games. Here is what I came up with. I gave each team 5 apples and had them do their best to stack them. The team who had the most apples stacked at one minute won. You could also have a person from each team eat an apple and the person who eats most of the apple wins. For this one you will need 2 jars and a bunch of plastic animals. I taped a picture of Noah's Ark to the outside. Each person puts the jar by their feet. While standing straight each person tries to drop an animal into the jar from their nose. The teams that has the most animals is the jar at one minute wins. Each team is given a stack of cups. The team who has the tallest tower at one minute wins. For this one you will need 2 empty tissue boxes, 2 belts and 16 ping pong balls. Put slits on the two sides of the tissue box to slip the belt through. Fill each tissue box with 8 ping pong balls. Each person playing ties the belt around his waist with the box in the back. They both have one minute to dance around until all of the ping pong balls (seeds) have been bounced out of the tissue box. For this you will need 2 straws, 40 marshmallows, and two plates. Each person will have one minutes to get 20 marshmallows (sheep) into the plate (the pen) with the straw. For this challenge you will need 10 3"x 14" pieces of poster board and about 40 cups. Give each player 5 pieces of poster board and a stack of cups. Each player builds a ladder with the poster board for rungs. The team with the tallest ladder wins. Each team gets a copy of Joseph's coat to color. They have one minute to color it on their head. Each player must use at least five colors. The team is allowed to give advice on how to color in the lines. The team that does the best job wins. This one I did not end up doing. Here's how it could be done. You will need 20 old Bibles. Each team will have one member help another team member stack 5 Bibles in each hand. Then they will have to walk across the room with all 10 Bibles without dropping them. The team that gets all 10 Bibles across the room first wins. This challenge is in reference to Deuteronomy 33:17. Give each team a bag of Honeycomb cereal. Each team will have one member lie down on the ground while another team member stacks the honeycomb cereal, one on top of the other, to look like a unicorn horn. The team that has the tallest horn wins (without cheating). For this challenge you will need to print out two pictures of the brick wall below onto cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half like a card. Place the cards at one end of the table. Both teams have a member blow the card across the table and then try to get the card to hang off the edge without falling off. If the card falls off then they have to start all over. Bounce a ping pong ball at least twice to knock over Goliath. The first person to do it in under a minute wins. Here's a printout for you to use. For the Champions I made these trophies out of Toblerone. Just print out the picture below. Cut it out and glue it to the top of a Toblerone. The students loved it. This is all the further we have studied this year. If we come up with more games I will be sure to post them on here. Good Luck! Check out my other New Testament Minute to Win it game. Here's another fun game to play with scriptures. I also have Grinch Minute to Win it Games And Alice in Wonderland Minute to Win it Games And Frozen themed Minute to Win it Ideas
