Hello everyone and welcome to a new video! As I explain in the intro, I was ~somehow~ in the mood to handstitch stays. I think it's because I bought Patterns ...
This post provides my insights and lessons learned about the fit and construction of Regency Period stays. I certainly wouldn’t tout myself as a corset making expert, as this is my first, but perhaps not last, attempt at period costuming. I’m just hoping that a post on my experience might save another adventurer such as…
Next up in our #StarsofStats series... Thomas Bayes. Bayes wasn’t appreciated in his own time, so we asked illustrator Adam Murphy to give him the recognition he deserves. A statistician, philosopher, and Presbyterian minister, he devised Bayes’ Theorem, but this was only published after his death - and even then it was long dismissed as useless. Centuries later, Bayesian reasoning finally came into its own when it was resurrected by Alan Turing and used to crack the Enigma code. Nowadays, it

This summer, I started on what will be my big project for the rest of the year. A pair of fully hand-sewn stays, based on this beautiful pair in Patterns of Fashion 5: When I first heard Luca Costigliolo describe his (newly found) method for patterning stays at the Structuring Fashion conference a year ago,…

These 18th century linen stays were an impromptu sewing project with linen fabric scraps from my stash.
For my Chemise a la Reine/a la Oberkampf, I’m making a pair of late 18th century stays from Corsets and Crinolines by Norah Waugh. It’s the 1790s stay pattern on page 44. I would be very curious to know just what museum or historic house collection the sketch and diagram for this pair of stays…

It’s almost time for the GBACG At home with Josephine at Malmaison event at the Bellvue Club. I actually purchased a costume to wear to this Regency event, a few weeks back at the GBACG Bazaar. Turns out the costume I purchased was worn in a BBC costume drama of some sort. More on that later. But for my event, I needed a petticoat to wear under the dress, that would smooth out the bust area, because my stays made it look a bit lumpy. I think that’s also, ahem, in part because the costume is a tad bit small in that area. I’ve since moved a bunch of hooks and eyes and made it a bit bigger, but have yet to try them on together. I’m still somewhat undecided if I’ll wear it to the event or instead make a gown that is more of an evening gown. depends on time really and if there is enough of it before the event.

“The craftsmanship in 18th century stays is so meticulous it's definitely worth showing off. This corset is from the @TullieHouse collection and is a brilliant example of hand stitching from the 1780's. #sewing”
