Many Dutch still lifes can be read as more than just brilliant illusionistic representations of nature. Mignon’s fruit – once luscious and beautiful but now spoiled and inedible – is typical of these sorts of vanitas paintings. They were designed to recall Christian teachings on the brevity of life and the urgent need to focus on lasting spiritual matters rather than fleeting earthly pleasures, reminding the viewer that eating could easily lead to sin.

Why are his figures nude? It is our most basic self, unadorned with things that have cultural or time specific references. As with his still life painting, the backgrounds to his figures are semi-abstract. Tobias Harrison wants to give a clue to the space, not describe it in detail, so as to concentrate on the subject. He only paints direct from life in a natural light. This gives the opportunity to keep taking a fresh look at the subject. About This floral photography has a dramatic sense of composition which recalls the careful arrangements of Dutch and Flemish still life paintings from the 17-18 century. With multiplied layering of soft pink, beige and red flowers all being emerged in blue water, soothed by the current and caressed by light, this abstract photography definitely has a painterly feel and is a true tribute to life forces and to the cycle of nature. Belgian photographer Isabelle Menin creates portraits of flowers that are not only gorgeous in form and color, but also uniquely expressive. Fresh blossoms and withering blooms melt into each other in dreamy washes of color and hazy drips and swirls. Hues and flowers are reflected in pools of water, as forms disintegrate and reappear in trickles and indistinct glimmers of light. The resulting images are breathtaking interplays of light and shadow, form and reflections, and breathtaking colors and textures. Looking at Menin's vibrant and organic work, it isn't surprising to learn that she has a background in painting. After working with paint for over a decade, the artist turned to digital photography instead. With rich colors, bold textures, and a stunning abstract quality, her creations look more like masterful illustrations and paintings than conventional photographs. Part of this is due to the digital manipulation that Menin loves using to transform and blend photos in order to create her beautifully moody images. Menin calls her work inland photographs and disordered landscapes" in reference to the strange complexity of nature, which reminds her of human complexity. She says ;The uncontrolled forces, the shapes’ complexity, the interweavings and the synergy of the elements, they all look to me like a mirror of human spirit. We are no straight lines, we are like nature, a very large network of interferences that work together to produce something which sometimes looks accomplished and then gets destroyed in a perpetual coming and going between order and disorder. In the past five years, Isabelle Menin has had numerous exhibitions in Europe and internationally -both at art fairs and museums. These include the Belgium Modern Art Exhibition , Hongqiao Museum in Shanghai, China, OFF Art Fair – Brussels, Kunstraï – Amsterdam, MIA Fair - Milan – Italy, Setup Contemporary Art Fair, Bologna – Italy, Fotofever - Carrousel du Louvre - Paris - France , The Perception of Beauty - Group show - Sophie Marée Gallery (La Haye), Femmes de Belgique - Group Show - Sophie Marée Gallery (La Haye), and « FLORA » , Musée des Beaux-Arts, Mons, Belgium . Delicate and detailed floral still life by Alfred Broge (Danish, 1870-1955). Three white anemones and one pink poppy, all with stems and leaves, sit against a medium grey background. They are carefully rendered, with subtle texture. The shadows and highlights demonstrate Broge's mastery of lighting and realistic style. Signed and dated "Alf. Broge 1908" in the lower right corner. Presented in an antique gilded frame. Frame size: 18.75"H x 12.75"W Board size: 14.5"H x 8.5"W Karl Harald Alfred Broge was a painter of the Danish School, born in Copenhagen in 1870. He was a pupil of Holger Grönvold and exhibited at the Academy of Arts from 1889 to 1894, where he was a student of Rudolf Bissen for a short while. His paintings were exhibited at Castle Charlottenborg between 1892 and 1911 and at the Art Union between 1921 and 1940. He received several honors for his works, eg. the Academy Prize in 1900, 1901 and 1903. He is best known for his sunlit Danish interiors, often with a seated lady, but also an accomplished painter of Danish Landscapes which he exhibited at the Academy in 1891, 1892 and 1894. He was appointed director of a “drawing school for women without fortune.” less
Oil painting on canvas. The H.Sanders signature is present on the barrel at the bottom left. The scene, set outdoors in a street of a Flemish city, with the canal in the background on the left, sees in the foreground a vegetable seller behind her stall, which is set up with a varied composition of winter vegetables, a composed still life from cauliflowers, cabbage, carrots, corn on the cob; next to the woman, a passer-by carrying a harpoon on his shoulder is offering her some fish, evidently the fruit of his catch that he wants to sell. The setting brings to mind Amsterdam, the city where the Dutch painter Hercules (or Herkules) Sanders was born and lived, who established himself mainly as a portraitist, but of whom an interior genre scene is known, currently at the Detroit Institute of Arts, dated 1647 and entitled 'Woman cleaning fish', whose female figure closely resembles the seller of the work presented here. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. About Gary Ruddell’s imagery captures a vivid dream-like world seemingly caught in a temporal flux, where figures act out miraculous feats of levitation and balance. Ruddell employs dramatic colors and graphic edges that mediate gestural stabs and blurry pulls of paint evocative of hazy memories. There is profound commitment to the act of painting, through which Ruddell frames a world that is both fleeting and eternal.
