I arbeidet med Norsk Bunadleksikon, dukket det opp et spørsmål som viste seg å være litt kinkig: Hva er en beltestakk og hvor går grensen mellom det som kan kalles beltestakk og kjoler med bånd på? Dette kan virke som en litt søkt problemstilling, men det er faktisk svært vanskelig å gi noe entydig svar. Det er stor variasjon i hvordan drakta lages idag, noe som er helt ulikt de fleste andre bunader som er i produksjon. Grunnen til dette er at beltestakken aldri har vært igjennom en rekonstruksjonsprosess, slik de fleste andre bunader har vært som er rekonstruert fra folkedrakter.
