I have always found Art Nouveau design to be entrancing with its graceful, undulating lines and coalescence of diverse details. I am reminded of this when I view the pottery of Carol Long. Working from a family farm studio in Kansas, Carol reproduces the beauty of her surrounding environment into her pieces using floral and insect motifs, combined with flowing lines, merging into leaf and plant details . She incorporates a myriad of designs, textures and vibrant colours using slip trailing, sgraffito, pressed shapes, glazed surfaces, and plain clay surfaces all in one piece and manages to infuse a
Rowan Mersh (previously) creates textural artworks that toe the line between two and three dimensions, using carefully placed swirls of seashells. Each artwork is made up one only one kind of shell, which the artist uses in multiples as he explores the physical qualities and hidden beauties of the material. Mersh explains his process to Colossal: On beginning a new project I first make a small sample to understand how best to work with the material, using elements of my chosen material such as size, shape and colour of the material to inform surface pattern. Pueblo Native American Indian pottery wares New Mexico A busy morning on the wheel - Cretan Terracotta Pottery Pottery simplicity realised The basic pottery form, created on a spinning wheel, is a statement of simplicity. The imminent curved lines, that take shape by the manipulation of a clay mass in motion, reacting to a centrifugal force, creates a graceful and balanced dynamic. The union of a malleable substance with a primary force of nature, being transmuted to a solid form with fire, is one of the purest primordial combinations, manifesting a subtle reassurance of the elements. Maybe that's why

This mortar is shaped with molder, and other processes such as making grinding and glazing are done by hands. The shape of Suribachi is slightly different from all-handmade version, but the glaze and grinding performance are exactly the same. Japanese mortar (suribachi, literally grinding bowl in English) has the lines unlike that of most of the other countries. They’re made for grinding foods finely with less power. My mortar's grinding area look like swirling where other Japanese mortar has lines straight down. It prevents ingredients from moving upwards of a mortar, they keep staying in the swirl while grinding. It makes even grinding food much faster with lesser effort, comparing with normal mortar, and It also reduces frictional heat, which keeps scent of food. Usually Japanese mortar is easy to use for right-handed people (the direction of the lines are made so), though my mortar can grind both clockwise and anti-clockwise. People who are left-handed can use comfortably too. I also have the pestles (surikogi, literally grinding stick in English) that match to my mortar. They are made of Japanese natural wood.
