Scientists have engineered an enzyme which can digest some of our most commonly polluting plastics, providing a potential solution to one of the world's biggest environmental problems. The discovery could result in a recycling solution for millions of tons of plastic bottles which currently persist for hundreds of years in the environment. Researchers from the University of Portsmouth and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) collaborated with scientists at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron to determine the structure of the recently discovered PETase with intense beams of X-rays 10 billion times brighter than the sun. They not only determined the enzyme’s structure, but they went a step further and accidentally engineered a variant of PETase which was even better at breaking down PET plastics. The Proton Synchrotron (PS) is a key component in CERN’s accelerator complex, where it usually accelerates either protons delivered by the Proton Synchrotron Booster or heavy ions from the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). In the course of its history it has juggled many different kinds of particles, feeding them directly to experiments or to more powerful accelerators.

With the 1957 development of the Zero Gradient Synchrotron, Argonne became a user-oriented laboratory accessible to all sectors of society.
