Disclosure: Janis Cox gave me a copy of this book free of charge to review. All opinions in my review are my own and I did not receive any other compensation. As in all my reviews I am providing links for your ease, but receive no compensation. Today I get to share with you a wonderful book called Tadeo Turtle written and illustrated by Janis Cox. Now I got to know about Tadeo Turtle through Sharing Saturday. Every few weeks Janis will share a Tadeo craft with us. Recently she asked if I would like to review the book and I jumped at the chance. As you can see on the cover, the illustrations throughout the book are beautiful paintings that Janis did to go along with her story. This story is about a turtle, Tadeo, who is happy until he sees a squirrel having fun running and jumping and climbing trees. He realizes with his shell he cannot do those things and wonders what it would be like to not have a shell. He has a dream about stepping out of his shell and trying the joyous things the squirrel did and he is happy in his dream until he sees a cat. He has no place to hide without his shell. In the end Tadeo realizes that God made him with his shell so he would have the protection he would need as a turtle. God had a purpose for turtles and provided them with what they needed. At the end of the book are crafts and activities for the children to try. Hazel jumped on making a paper plate Tadeo. Instead of painting the plate we used tissue paper so it would not have to dry before decorating. I let Hazel do the cutting of the tissue paper pieces to decorate and I cut out the legs, head and tail for her. I think he is adorable!! Janis also offers first and second grade curriculum to go with the book. She also has some activities on her website. And she has many Tadeo craft ideas in her Creative Saturday section. So I have to say we really enjoyed this book. The message was wonderful and the paintings are beautiful!! I highly recommend it.
This week on Creative Saturdays Janis shows how to create a picture using torn pieces of paper. No scissors allowed. Make a Torn Tadeo Turtle.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Secret of the Oozing Buttercream Event: "That Takes The Cake" 2011 7th Annual Sugar Art Show & Cake Competition (Austin, TX) BUT I DIDN'T ACTUALLY SUBMIT THIS CAKE Division: Adult Intermediate Style: Buttercream Only Media: styrofoam dummy, Wilton buttercream So I was too embarrassed to enter this cake into the show. I felt fantastic about it when I finished it ... but that was over a week ago. When I brought the cake out before the show, I saw how the colors had bled and the whole thing didn't look as bright as it used to. I just looked at it again to take pictures and you know what? I should have just submitted the damn thing. It's not a train wreck. Know what else? I would have grabbed an easy 3rd place! There were only 2 cakes in my division for that category. Oh well, maybe next year ;)

Learn to do a plastic bag printmaking. Janis uses a plastic bag to make prints and create an underwater scene in watercolour.
Have you heard the joke about the farmer who found a turtle on a fence post? He says, “Well there is only one way that turtle could have got there and that’s if someone put him there”. I believe that can be a picture of our lives. God has a plan for each one of us. Sometimes we wonder how we got to where we are today. God certainly has helped me in many ways. I know he pursued me about ten years ago. I can look back now and see His Presence even when I didn’t see it then. One of my favourite stories happened early on in my walk with Jesus. I had become involved with a group of women who were helping refugees from Zimbabwee find food and clothing. Then we needed to find them permanent residences. I had searched the Internet and found a few apartments that were for rent. My girlfriend, the woman from Zimbabwee and her child were in a car in front of me. I followed them. We were headed to another appointment to see a rental. As we turned the corner onto another street, my friend all of a sudden pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. It was so sudden I almost drove by, and I had to quickly pull in behind her. Frustrated with her actions, I got out of my car to ask what on earth she was doing. She rolled down her window and said to me, “Let’s try this place on the right”. And I answered her, “Can’t you see the sign – NO VACANY.” She said, “I know but I just feel God saying take a look here.” So we pulled into the parking lot and I volunteered to go to the door and ask. I certainly felt stupid as I pushed the button for the apartment superintendent. “Yes”, he said. “Yes a one bedroom apartment just came up. Would you like to see it?” I stammered, “Just a minute, I need to get some people from the car”. We went in and had a lovely chat, found out the building was run by the Salvation Army, had a great rental rate, they would redo the kitchen and put in new appliances. What a blessing! That’s how our refugee friend obtained her first residency in Canada. Thank You God for putting us in that place at that time. And thank you to my friend for listening to God’s voice. Book Trailer: Janis reads Tadeo Turtle on YouTube. You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukZxOph1pPU Book Blurb: Janis’ first book, Tadeo Turtle, was published in the fall of 2012. She is both the author and the illustrator (in watercolour). It is a book for children aged 2-7. The story is about a little turtle who longs to be different. Through an exciting adventure he learns to accept how God has created him. Activities and research ideas are found at the back of the book. A full curriculum can be obtained for free. On Saturdays she posts Creative Saturdays with more art ideas for children. Please check out the To Buy Tadeo Page for all the links where Tadeo Turtle can be purchased.
