I nearly got to see this in the theater with a friend when Cowboy and I were searching for an apartment before we moved to Virginia. But we went to see the True Grit remake instead. I have to say, I'm kind of glad we made that choice, not because I liked True Grit better, but because that had some sweeping shots of lovely western landscapes that really benefited from the big screen. The King's Speech, on the other hand, is an extremely intimate movie, very character-focused, limited both in scope and scenery. There are only a handful of outside shots, very few that are shot from far enough away that you can see anyone full-length. Perfectly fine to watch in the living room. The King's Speech concerns King George VI (Colin Firth) of England, beginning when he's just a spare heir with an ailing father and a playboy older brother who is set to inherit the throne. He also has two beautiful daughters, a very supportive wife (Helena Bonham Carter), and a dreadful stammer. Oh, and his name isn't George at all, it's Albert. Got it? Albert (Colin Firth) and Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) Right, so his wife convinces him to try this new speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), who has unorthodox methods but gets Albert speaking more clearly. Then King George V (Michael Gambon) dies, and Albert's older brother becomes King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce) but insists he wants to marry this twice-divorced woman, which totally can't happen since as king he's also head of the Church of England and they won't hear of it, especially the Archbishop (a perpetually affronted Derek Jacobi). Edward abdicates and Albert takes the name George and is king, king, king!!! Except he doesn't want to be king, he's scared out of his bowtie, and he still stammers dreadfully. Oh, and did I mention there's this dude named Hitler trying to take over the universe? Let the good times roll. Colin Firth deserved his Oscar, I will say that. He's conflicted and sad and sometimes pathetic, but also brave and intelligent and so horribly, horribly aware of his speech impediment. I can't imagine what it must be like to turn in such a brutally bare performance, and I don't want to -- I spent the whole movie feeling extremely sad for Albert, and to play him, much less be him? Ouch. This is not a comfortable movie to watch, though it does have a triumphant ending. But I don't think I'll be rewatching it, at least not for many years. Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth I wanted to see this mainly because I was eager to see Helena Bonham Carter playing a character who wasn't Miss Havisham with a hairspray addiction. And I absolutely loved her! She was hands-down my favorite character -- her Elizabeth was supportive without being pushy, affectionate without being saccharine. Wonderful. Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) Who but Geoffrey Rush to play a rough-and-ready therapist? Not much to say about him, other than that he did not disappoint. Does he ever? Not one of my favorite actors, but definitely one I respect. Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall) There was only one actor that I couldn't quite accept in their role, and that was Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill. And that was partly because I couldn't rid my mind of his performances as Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew in the Harry Potter movies. Plus, his only resemblance to Churchill was his balding head and the way he pushed his lower lip out all the time -- he looked more like Alfred Hitchcock to me, but whatever, he had a tiny role anyway. I love everything about the WWII era (well, everything except all the horrible death and destruction), so I found all the costumes here so delightful! This is the eve of WWII, of course, but close enough. This is the one costume I remembered most now that it's been a few days since I watched this: It struck me at the time as being very much a costume -- and I don't mean the movie kind, exactly. I mean that he was quite obviously dressed up to look the way everyone expected the new king to look, wearing all sorts of traditional male frippery. I loved this one, though, mostly cuz I have a thing for suspenders: And I love this shot of Elizabeth pouring tea: She has a lot of furs, and some of the most magnificent hats. This one was particularly striking, but she wore all of them with great panache: Lionel Logue mostly wore very tweedy, fade-into-the-background clothes, as befitted his role as the man behind the king's speech improvements: Right, so this is rated R because Lionel discovers Bertie doesn't stammer when he curses, so he gets him to shout out every single curse word he knows, yelling obscenity after obscenity in an emotionally relieving torrent. There are a couple other moments where he tosses off a few obscenities to get into the flow of speaking, so you can't just skip that one scene and be safe. Best to either find a Bowdlerized version or watch with a trusted friend who knows which bits to mute, if you are adverse to hearing some completely out-of-context but very strong swear words. Other than that, there are a couple mentions of people enjoying a woman's favors (using that exact phrase), and that's all that I could find objectionable. At any rate, a lovingly crafted movie, meticulously recreating the world as it once was. Blissfully, deliciously acted. Worth the praise it has acquired, in my opinion.

Hello everyone, We are having an amazing summer here on the Island with lots of sunny hot days(but not too hot) and cooler evenings. It has been awhile since we had a summer this lovely. Today, I am sharing some whimsy in the garden. Every garden needs a little touch of whimsy don't you think? the little woman above was a gift from my daughters last year and she is sporting my apron and straw hat . I love this little fairy that moves around the garden. Our garden is large so we have a few statues to add some interest here and there. I got this old cement birdbath at the Restore a few weeks ago. A pretty teacup adds a little whimsy to the garden. I love birdhouses and find them hard to pass up. This old iron stove was sitting on the side of the road for junk day a couple of years ago- a little spray paint and a Fairy rose and it added some interest to this corner of the garden. What could be more charming then a real little fairy in the garden? I like to have a few birdbaths scattered around the garden. A mirror behind the statue adds a little intrigue. I love this birdhouse from tjmaxx. The same spraypaint on this obelisk draws the eye into this bed. A place to put some seed for the birds and welcome you into the garden. The little woman decked out for a wedding- our grandneice and nephew were in a wedding recently and they came to the garden for photos so I thought it would be fun to add more whimsy. I love this birdhouse also. Mary tucked into the virginia creeper. Cute little cement rabbit. And finally this bicycle from our local Winner's and spray painted pistachio green adds some whimsy as it gets moved around the garden. Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers for my Mom. It has been a difficult road for Mom as at 87 bowel surgery is always major. I am happy to say that Mom is showing improvement but it will be slow. She still has a tube in to drain her stomach and has not had anything to eat in 12 days except a little sugar and water in her iv. She was smiling today but we are still waiting for that cup of tea-hopefully tomorrow! I pray after going through all that she has, she will make a good recovery and be back at the home where she has lived for the past few years. Thank you so much from Mom and I for your kindness. I have not had much time for playing with my camera lately but these are some pics from over the summer. Take care, Carolyn

Dearest Dear Friends of The Tearoom, Welcome! Today, it is only you and I having our special Valentine tea in front of the fire. My mind returns again and again to the theme of today's party... Fruit, beautiful, sun-ripened, sweet, luscious fruit... The purples and reds of fruit juice, the pleasure of the sweet, the pucker of tart, the intoxicating madness of that first bite of fully-ripened summer fruit. Some people get this rush from the first sip of their favorite alcoholic tipple or a drag from their first cigarette of the day. (I myself do not understand this, but I have seen the unguarded look of pleasure on the faces of people indulging in these things, so I know it is true.) But for me, the miracle of my first bite of the fresh produce of the season provides that momentary dizzying high. This one living object, devoting its whole life to being the most perfect version of itself that it can be. What lies sleeping in seeds, in dormant plants, in the Earth at this very moment, just waiting to bring us pleasure? I dare you to sit on the purple couch in The Tearoom, under the enormous wall decoration of fruit I have placed there for our party today, and not feel just a fleeting moment of this singular pleasure.... Welcome, Dear Friend, to a Valentine's Tea, fairly bursting with life! Can't you just smell the fragrance coming to us from the ornate tea pot? It is a tea that I am still just dying to try: Charlotte au Chocolat, from Dammann Frères of Paris with flavors of sugared almond and chocolate, with sunflower petals for brightness! Can't you just taste it as we speak of it? Can you imagine how really decadent a cup of this would be with a dabble of cream and (if you wish), a bit of sugar? I could drink it all day! Oh, but My Dear, we have some catching up to do! It has been such a long time since we have taken a tour around Paris to see what is new and just with us for Valentine's Day only! The House of Dalloyau has a luscious-looking pair of religieuses named Valentine et Valentin (sold only as a pair, not to be separated until shared with you and your love!) A description of them: "My Pulpy Raspberry delicately scented with violet reveals a tender and luscious raspberry heart. My Soft Caramel is sure to thrill with its cream flavored with rum ..." Here is another of Dalloyau's Valentine treats: the Duo de Macarons Coeur, in raspberry and chocolate/duja (chocolate and hazelnut) flavors! The House of Laduée surprises us with a tangy, creamy combination in their newest macaron flavor: grapefruit and vanilla! "From The House of Pierre Hermé, exclusively for Valentine's Day, the Envie macaron, which he describes this way: "Macaron biscuit, vanilla-violet cream and blackcurrants. The "Envie" combination featuring blackcurrant, vanilla and violet was created by Pierre Hermé in 1992. The intense floral note of the violet, tempered by the vanilla, softens the tart bitterness of the blackcurrant." And a macaron not specifically with Valentine's Day in mind, but only available until the 27th of this month, his new "Jardin Enchanté" with the flavors of rose, lime and touched with the tingle of Espelette pepper! It is the first of his new collection for spring, which I will be following closely. For more information, please click here. And of course, returning like the dearest of old friends, some of the most lovely things: A pair of Ispahan heart macarons filled with luscious fresh raspberries, with notes of rose and litchi. If you just can't get enough of this most romantic of flavor combinations, please take a glimpse here for the dizzying array of other forms this one of his Fetish flavors comes in. Our old friend the Coeur Infiniment Vanille, made even more complex and beautiful with Monsieur Hermé's signature combination of vanillas grown in Madagascar, Tahiti and Mexico, looking just as elegant and beautiful as ever... Because we just can't have enough today, couldn't we just go for something luscious and chocolate? How could we forget when The House of Fauchon graced us with their Joconde eclairs? Have had enough sweets today? Here's a visually arresting, beautiful and nutritious salad recipe from Etsy, especially for Valentine's Day! What a great example of the miracles of nature that are available to us each day that are delicious, fascinating and so good for you. Thank you, Dear Ones, for celebrating Valentine's Day with me today and indulging in some of the most beautiful and delicious that Paris has to offer. We now look forward to spring and the birth of yet another new shop on Etsy.... (Thank you, as always to Asunder Ephemera, The Picture Palace and The Graphics Fairy for some of the graphics used in the collages.)
