Cyanocitta stelleri: A North American corvid bird, common in the Northwest’s coniferous mountain and coastal forests.
Sometimes it’s just more fun to let a little piece of paper make a decision for us, be it paint color, vacation spot, or dinner delivery. You might remember these paper fortune tellers (also known as cootie catchers, chatterboxes, salt cellars, or whirlybirds) from your grade school days, made to pass time and bring a laugh or three. They’re great to play around with for nostalgia sake, or when you just can’t make that really “difficult” decision on your own.

Steller's Jay, North Cheyenne Canyon Park, Colorado From the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: A large, dark jay of evergreen forests in the mountainous West. Steller’s Jays are common in forest wildernesses but are also fixtures of campgrounds, parklands, and backyards, where they are quick to spy bird feeders as well as unattended picnic items. When patrolling the woods, Steller’s Jays stick to the high canopy, but you’ll hear their harsh, scolding calls if they’re nearby. Graceful and almost lazy in flight, they fly with long swoops on their broad, rounded wings.

A while ago I saw a brilliant resource from Stuart Godman at www.aheadofhistory.co.uk who had created a peer assessment version of the playground paper 'fortune teller' game. It's great to reach these out as a plenary activity at the end of an intense lesson of historical analysis and get the students talking to each other
This bold bird is frequently found scavenging in campgrounds and picnic areas in the North American West.
