Ellora, in India, con i suoi templi scavati nella roccia, è uno dei luoghi più significativi del subcontinente indiano, non solo per la sua importanza religiosa ma anche per la sua splendida architettura rupestre. Il tempio indù di Kailasa è, tra tutti, il più stupefacente, perché non fu scavato all’interno di una grotta, ma tagliato in senso verticale attraverso un gigantesco monolite basaltico. Quando si visita il tempio di Kailasa, nel silenzio prima dell'alba, non si può fare a meno di ringraziare coloro che hanno progettato e scolpito questo maestoso promemoria di un passato sconosciuto. Quando ancora la luce del giorno non illumina le alte mura di roccia, la perfezione delle strutture dei diversi santuari, le molte statue delle divinità vediche, i pannelli con scene dei poemi epici Ramayana e Mahabharata, le file di elefanti e leoni, prima dell’arrivo di turisti rumorosi, si può avvertire la magia di questo luogo, e apprezzare in solitudine il misticismo che lo pervade. Entrando nel Mandapa, il Sancta Sanctorum del tempio, è come entrare in un altro mondo: i sedici massicci pilastri, posti in perfetta simmetria in gruppi di quattro, colpiscono, oltre che l'occhio, anche lo spirito. La tradizione vuole che si giri intorno ai pilastri da sinistra a destra, per osservare i simboli scolpiti in ciascuno dei quattro lati: nulla è solo decorazione, tutti hanno un messaggio da raccontare. Il tempio di Kailasa non fu costruito: fu tagliato e scolpito da un unico pezzo di roccia scavato nelle colline di Charanandri, nell'altopiano del Deccan, in un villaggio una volta chiamato Elapura, ora conosciuto come Ellora, 30 km a nord-ovest di Aurangabad. Nulla del tempio originale è stato portato dall'esterno. Tutto è stato creato da un'unità, e tutto è un simbolo della creazione. Anche se questo tempio, la sua struttura, e le sue incisioni sono state alterate molte volte, il messaggio originale è miracolosamente sopravvissuto. Ci sono molti templi a Ellora, uno accanto all'altro; trentaquattro sono aperti ai visitatori, alcuni sono indù, altri sono dedicati a Buddha e alcuni a Mahavira, il fondatore del Giainismo. Ma a differenza del tempio di Kailasa, sono grotte scavate in senso orizzontale, con una sola apertura frontale (tranne un altro tempio più piccolo dei giainisti). Il tempio di Kailasa fu “tagliato” dall'alto verso il basso, per circa 50 metri di profondità. Ma tagliato con che cosa? Come è stato possibile scavare questa roccia di duro basalto, per ricavare i diversi santuari che compongono il tempio? Il re Krishna I volle questo tempio, edificato tra il 757 e il 783 dC., per richiamare il Monte Kailash, la casa del dio Shiva, tanto che lo fece dipingere di bianco, ad imitazione della neve che ricopre la montagna. Secondo alcuni archeologi, durante il lavoro di scavo furono rimosse 300.000 tonnellate di roccia, un lavoro immane compiuto in appena 18 anni; per altri studiosi ci vollero centinaia di anni per poter realizzare quest’impresa. La leggenda racconta in modo diverso la storia del tempio: il re era molto malato e la regina pregò Shiva di guarire il marito; in cambio lei promise di edificare un tempio in suo onore, e di osservare il digiuno fino alla fine della costruzione. Shiva ascoltò la regina, e fece guarire il marito. Gli architetti incaricati di realizzare il tempio erano preoccupati per la fretta della regina, perché sapevano che quel tipo di costruzione avrebbe richiesto molto tempo. Tuttavia, un architetto di nome Kokasa rassicurò la sovrana, dicendole che avrebbe costruito il tempio in una settimana. Cominciò a scavare dall’alto verso il basso, e quando il santuario fu finito apparve come un luogo magico, pieno di incredibili sculture.
