A brief history and some rad photos. em·broi·der·y /əmˈbroid(ə)rē/ 1. the art of creating and producing raised designs or motifs on woven fabrics, paper, or plastic and, in rare instances, on knitted fabrics. Like the 87 year old in all of us, embroidery is an old soul. The form of art appeared way back (waaaay back) in Cro-Magnon fossils dating back as early as 30,000 BCE. Embroidery later appeared in China in 3500 BCE, and then again during the Iron Age as early as 2500 BCE. Basically, embroidery is a stubborn old lady. A long, long time later (but still way waaaay back) in the 1500's, embroidery became popular in Europe, and then grew all over the world. In many cultures, the art was associated with wealth, because, you know, these hand-made things take time. In the 19th century the innovation of Berlin wool (like the adult version of color by numbers) allowed embroidery to gain popularity among the lower class and domestics. Because of its speed and cost, most of the embroidery you see today is machine made. In present day, embroidery is seen as a creative outlet and a form of expression. (not that humans weren't creative back then either). We love us some unusual, spectacular and just plain beautiful forms of expression. Find here some of our favorites and click through to find the amazingly cool artists behind each photograph (if they hadn't gone incognito). If you're a history buff or just can't get enough of embroidery, you can find more information here and here. Now go on, get your trendy, on-point (pun intended) embroidery on.
Every so often I wake up with a word list in my mind. It happened a month ago at 3 am. It happened last week at midnight and it happened this morning at 5 am. The list is a series of verbs that contrast each other. I have a note pad at the side of my bed so that I can write down my dreams. Sometimes
Throwing all modesty out the window: I've knit a lot of beautiful things over the years, but I'm not sure...
I finished it yesterday- close up of 'grasses by the canal' 11cm x 31cm. Paint and dye on calico. Hand stitched. 3 layers of fabric. Whole thing- but long and thin so difficult for photos. I tried to capture the bright light of summer and dappled shadows - something to work on ( next time, next time) I am pleased with it but always there is knowledge that it could be better and that is the drive that keeps me working! Hot summer days here- no rain for the garden. Meals eaten outside on the new patio under the parasol. Summer clothes. We are not used to this!

No matter how well designed a pattern may be, it cannot fit each individual perfectly. Each human body has its own quirks, and each person has different fitting needs. You may find that you need to enlarge a pattern beyond the sizes available on the sheet, or you might need to shrink it. Perhaps you

Mr. Finch, a reserved artist in England who goes only by this name, creates beautiful woodland creatures and plants that seem to have come right out of old English fables. Hares, spiders and mushrooms are recurring characters in his dream-like pieces, which are also inspired by British folklore and fairytales. They are all sewn out of vintage textiles, each of which has a story to tell.
