So over the past 3 years I've made all kinds of anchor charts. Some are just random ideas I came up with, or trying to find a creative way to remind the kids of things. Others came from ideas I've seen online. So here's my disclaimer, I can't take credit for every single one of the ideas on these anchor charts. Some have come from online, others from colleagues, some from my little ol' brain! I usually keep them up all year round, but some get tucked away behind others, or put away in a binder, so don't mind the messy edges. I tried to take pictures of all of the charts before I gave them away to my kiddos at the end of the year, but most of them weren't in the greatest shape. {language arts anchor charts} {reading anchor charts} {math anchor charts} {science anchor charts} {social studies anchor charts} {spelling anchor charts} {writing anchor charts}

**Updated 7/7/15 - I put the 22 attention getters into 3 different table formats. You can choose which one (visually) works best for you.** I use these attention getters/grabbers on a daily basis with my ELL students. These attention getters are a great way to improve your classroom management. I usually pick one or two to teach the class at the beginning of the year. Then every month or every few weeks, I introduce a new attention getter, which my students can't wait for!! To get my students attention I simply say ‘Ready Set!’ and then they say ‘You Bet!’. Once the students say their part they are quietly looking at me for directions. It's as simple as that! The key is the students have to say their part the way you said yours. So if you whisper, they also have to whisper. If you said it like a robot, then they have to say it like a robot. Your students have to match your tone and intensity, which they love to do! If you like the fonts and background from this product, please check out my store! Make sure to follow me for more great resources! Thanks :)
I hope you have some tissues nearby, because this short film by Nathanael Matanick, known better as "Heschle," makes the term "tear-jerker" seem innocent.

On the first day of school I always guide my students to create the classroom rules. I base this off the Ideal Classroom activity in the TRIBES book and it really helps the students understand the importance of having classroom rules (to keep us safe and help us learn). Usually the students come up with A LOT of rules and I help them narrow them down to five (and they are usually very similar, if not the same, year to year). This year, though, I was quite impressed with the rules that my students came up with, and they couldn't narrow it any further down from six. I always write the rules on a poster board and the kids sign this "contract" for the year. We have been working on our first week time capsules. Yesterday the students wrote their first day letters to themselves and today they worked on a posted that includes: handprint, footprint, thumbprint, and list of favorites. I went around the room and cut a piece of string to the length of each students' height. All of these are placed in an envelope and sealed until the end of the year. I got some free envelopes a few years ago and loved the black ones, but never had a chance to use them. I figured this was a perfect opportunity. They put their photo on the front of their envelope and wrote on them in white crayon/pencil. We have a few more items to add to their time capsules before we seal them up! Here are a few from today.
