Just when you think you've heard everything there is to know about The Golden Girls, you happen upon a gem of an interview (which you'll see below, thanks to the Archive of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences), and it's the equivalent of discovering pop-culture gold. In this case, thank you, Rue McClanahan (Blanche), for being a friend spilling the most scintillating secrets I've ever heard about the show. 1) Bea Arthur (Dorothy) and Rue didn't have much of a friendship. Just wait till you see Rue do a spot-on impersonation of the crusty Bea Arthur in the video below. Rue admits that "Bea and I didn't have a lot of relationship going on. She wouldn't go to lunch with me unless Betty would go too." In fact, the girls really didn't hang out much outside of the show except when Estelle had her annual birthday party every June. 2) Estelle Getty (Sophia) was traumatized come tape night. Rue admits that Estelle had such severe stage fright that she would blank on tape nights and forget all of her lines. "She was a completely different person the rest of the week," Rue explains, "But once it was the day

Dorothy Zbornak didn't need words to silence her roommates on The Golden Girls. She would simply raise one eyebrow and look hard at Rose and Blanche until they quieted down. If that didn't work, though, Dorothy had an arsenal of acid-dipped one-liners at her disposal that she would whip out whenever necessary to shut down Rose or Blanche when they grated on her last nerve—which was often, over the course of the show's seven seasons on the air. Played to perfection by Bea Arthur (rumor has it the casting director always envisioned a "Bea Arthur-type" actress for the part), Dorothy got some of the best lines on the whip-smart show. Arthur's brilliantly dead-pan delivery heightened the laughs, while her brilliant facial expressions served up the knock-out punch. Rose and Blanche certainly got in a few digs of their own, but the only person who could match Dorothy in the one-liner department was her own mother. Who knew a knack for zingers could be a family trait? Dorothy's biting way with words may have been genetic, but we can all try to emulate it in real life, if we dare—or we can simply practice raising an eyebrow.
Betty White, who died Dec. 31, was the last surviving member of the Emmy-winning foursome: Here's how their magical chemistry came together.
