Die Herren von Lichtenstein (der Letzte Lichtensteiner fiel 1687 im Kampf gegen die Türken), denen neben ihrem stattlichen Stammsitz Güter und Rechte in Honau, Ober- und Unterhausen, Holzelfingen und Kleinengstingen gehörten. Im Verlauf der Städtekriege haben sich die Lichtensteiner verschiedentlich die Rache der Reutlinger zugezogen und letztere haben sich der Burg bemächtigt und dieselbe 1377 zerstört. Die Burg wurde nicht wieder aufgebaut, denn von der Herrschaft Württembergs ist eine andere Burg Lichtenstein erbaut worden und zwar nicht auf dem Platz der alten Burg, sondern in der Entfernung einer viertel Stunde, auf einem von der Albwand abgerissenen Felskegel derselben Felskante. Die um 1390 entstandene Burg galt als eine der festesten des Mittelalters und widerstand allen Angriffen.
