My friend, Ruth, over at Synch-ro-ni-zing wrote a thought provoking post about living in the face of death, despair and fear. This tragic tale relates an episode as the 100 Greek ships which sail for Troy to reclaim Helen. In some mythological versions, The king Agamemnon, after stopping at the island of Aulis and killing one of Artemis' sacred deers, is stranded with his army when the goddess stops the sailing winds. Calchis, Agamemnon's advisor and seer, tells the king only his daughter Iphigenia's sacrifice will suffice to appease the goddess. Agamemnon calls for his wife and daughter to come to Aulis under the pretense of marrying Achilles, which Iphigenia believes right up until the point of her death. (brutal!) In some versions, the Goddess Artemis saves Iphigenia at the last moment, replacing her with a deer to be sacrificed and whisking her away to safety. (*reminds me of Aphrodite whisking Paris away from his battle with Menelaus at Troy.) In Aesychlus' play "Agamemnon," the chorus (scene 2) relates a much more streamlined and grounded version of the tale. Aesychlus ratchets up the tension by dramatizing Agamemnon's seemingly impossible choice; Sacrifice his daughter and regain the winds, or risk starvation or mutiny by his own troops who support the sacrifice. In my illustration, I tried to emphasize Agamemnon's despair, as he turns away from the scene, unable to watch.
