Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem (sometimes known simply as The Electric Mayhem) are the house band on The Muppet Show. They mostly stick to rock music, but they're capable of playing other styles, including jazz and (unwillingly) classical. The band consists of Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, and Zoot on saxophone. In season five of The Muppet Show, Lips joined the band on trumpet. They drive around in a bri

Beaker is the hapless assistant to Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. He made his first appearance in Muppet Labs sketches during the second season of The Muppet Show. Kermit the Frog describes Beaker by saying "If somebody has to get hurt, it's almost always Beaker." Prior to Beaker's debut, Dr. Honeydew appeared in Muppet Labs segments by himself, but the timid assistant added a new level of comedy to the sketches. Dr. Honeydew's experiments and inventions always seem to go awry, and Beaker is their perpetu

Catherine the Great (1729-1796) was the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, reigning from 1762 until her death in 1796 at the age of 67. Rizzo the Rat dresses as Catherine the Great in a pitch for a sketch on Up Late with Miss Piggy in The Muppets episode "Pig Girls Don't Cry". The idea is that he'd dance with Pepe as Ivan the Terrible in "Dancing with the Czars" with Tom Bergeron.
Rowlf the Dog was the first Muppet to reach national stardom as a cast member of The Jimmy Dean Show from 1963 to 1966. He later went on to serve as the resident piano player on The Muppet Show, also playing the silly surgeon Dr. Bob on the recurring sketch "Veterinarian's Hospital." Rowlf first appeared in 1962 in a series of Purina Dog Chow commercials. He was paired with Baskerville the Hound in a series of ads which aired in Canada from 1962 to 1963. "Movin' Right Along" is sung in The Muppet Movie by Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear as they set out together in Fozzie's Studebaker for California. The song is generally upbeat and has a number of comical lines reflecting the passing scenery, such as Fozzie singing "Hey, I've never seen the sun come up in the west?" It also notably features a cameo from Big Bird who's heading east to break into public television. Later on in the film, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem perform their own (mostly)

The Muppets have been about recontextualizing and regurgitating unrelated pop culture since their inception, and the Disney blog's collection (on the occasion of their new movie) is an excellent look at just how long they've been at it. We've brought a few over here for you to look at, but for all of them, go straight to the source.
Pepe the King Prawn, whose full name is Pepino Rodrigo Serrano Gonzales, hails from Málaga, Spain. According to a 1999 TVGuide.com interview, he started out as a chef in Madrid, before moving to Hollywood and following his true calling in show business. Pepe remarked, "There were one too many close calls in the kitchen. I was mistaken for an appetizer, okay." The four-armed Pepe is very proud of being a king prawn and takes great offense if anyone refers to him as a shrimp ("I am not a shrimp! I
