Fig. 103 represents one web. The upper ribbons, travers-ing nearly the entire area of the hub, were very much the same as thelast described, except that on one side the spinningvvork was greatlythickened at the termination, giving a clul) shaped appearance. On eachof the other sides of the hub were thrown two parallel semicircular bandsslightly separated from each other. In another snare, represented very im-perfectly, indeed, at Fig. 164, the longitudinal bauds were lacking, but in-stead of them a series of four or five circular bands encompassed the hub.My sketches, taken upon the spot, do not show that these bands were con-centrics, thougli I have been inclined to think that such might have beenthe case. At one side of this orb was stretched a ladder like structure lead-ing from the hub to the outer foundation lines. This was a very peculiar Text Appearing After Image: Decorations. Fig. 163. I have called them decorative, not because 1 imaginethat the i)urpose of the spider in placing them upon lierUse of ^y^,]^ jj. jjj anywise analogous to the human sentiment ex-[ircssed by that word, but simply as a convenient term to in-dicate the character of the spinningwork as it presented itself tomy own mind. Certainly it did greatly enhance the beauty of the deli-cate structure. It is probable that these decorative ribbons or bands serveto protect the spider herself, and may also be of service in strengtheningthe web. But I liave sufficiently expressed my opinion on this subjectwhen treating of tlie snare of Argiope. (Cliai)ter VI.) No one who has studied with any care the spinningwork of the Or Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

This would, tlierc-fore, api)ear to be the commencement of her cocoon, and it may be thatagainst such a disk Caudata haliitually deposits her eggs before enclosingthem. However, I have not found this within her cocoons, as is the casewith Argiopes, and conclude that the disk is made the basis of the externalsac, into which it is woven as the spider proceeds. The cocoons are oftenwell separated upon the string, but also are found touching and even over- Text Appearing After Image: FiG. 90. There is, however, one important difference. The spiral concentrics, in-stead of being composed of single lines covered with viscid beads, as in^ . typical snares of the Orbitelarite, are composed for the most part Beads ^^ several very delicate filaments, although in certain parts thethread is single. To threads and filaments alike are often at-tached a number of minute objects, opaque, and for the most part amor-phous; but many of them being very small globes of a yellow color, per- Text Appearing After Image: Fici. 164. These opaqueobjects have so much the appearance of beads that a careless observer islikely to be deceived by them; at least, I was thus led astray in my firststudies of the Uloborus snare. There are, however, no viscid beads uponany of the lines, although the thread is certainly very adhesive, chieflyI suppose by reason of the delicacy and flocculence of the fibre. Thesmooth point of a pencil touched to it does not adhere; but when myfinger was laid ujion a spiral it adhered as in the case of a beaded web.In this respect the snare of Uloborus resembles that of the Triangle spider, Hyptiotes cavatus, and also certain species of the Clubion-Relations ijgg^ g^^j^jj ^^ Dictyna philoteichus and other species of that genus, culent ^^^ flocculent web was discovered and described by Blackwall,Spira Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
