My students struggle with identifying theme in a story and supporting their point of view with evidence from the text. As a seventh grade teacher, I pay close attention to what my students will be expected to produce in 8th grade. One of their future assignments is a theme paper with arguments backed up with quotes as evidence. This is a tool I use in the fall to introduce my students to a more in depth analysis of theme. It is my way of scaffolding for the future. I scaffold by offering some theme options and providing students with a detailed graphic organizer so that they can go step by step. Students do not produce an essay with this assignment, but it allows me an opportunity to see who understands the concept and who may need additional support. There is no rubric because answers will vary. I would grade this on the basis of completion, but would also check to make sure students cited quotes correctly, explained them with well thought out answers and used correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Students would be told this in advance and provided with a checklist to review before turning it in. The checklist is included at the end of the assignment. Two fit per page for purposes of saving paper. Each response would be worth 2 points and I would give 1 point for each page notation. I would also include 6 points total for the category of punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Every two errors would reduce a student’s grade by 1 point. I would consider this a classwork grade because they would complete it in class while I am available to answer questions. In my classroom, classwork goes into the category of reading response and counts as 30% of their final grade. The story is not provided here because of copyright issues. Use these lessons to teach critical social skills of perspective-taking to kids, including understanding perspectives, developing their own perspectives, and recognizing there can be more than one point of view in a situation. This resource includes two complete activities with an educator guide and lesson plan. These are a small sample of a paid resource and bundle that are listed below. Digital Version A digital version has now been included for Google Classroom! Why Teach Social Skills Social skills are the abilities and competencies we use to navigate the social world. These skills tell us how to act and what to say in particular social situations. With strong social skills, kids and young adults can more easily build friendships, get along with others, work collaboratively in groups, handle frustrations, and have an overall improved quality of life. While some kids and young adults learn social skills just from observing and interacting with those around them, many do not. These kids might struggle to develop friendships, have difficulty working in partners or groups, experience challenges in following directions, act in ways perceived as rude or mean, or misread the social cues of others. To these youngsters, the social world is confusing and challenging. Some students who may struggle with social skills specifically include those with autism, ADHD, ODD, intellectual disabilities, and a variety of other needs. This novel study is full of graphic organizers and reading skills practice for your students! I created this unit for my special education class that included four different grade levels. With the variation of skills included, I was able to have all of my students, fifth though eighth grade, read the same book while working on their own individual skills. Worksheets were created to meet the standards for the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP), but can easily be used in a general education classroom as well. Here's a list of what is included for EACH CHAPTER: -Work Work: Most of this is context clues, with some multiple meaning thrown in there -Write it Right: Practice using correct capitalization(1st letter, names, "I") and ending punctuation (periods and question marks) -Understanding the text: Multiple choice comprehension questions -Text Connections: Three different graphic organizers. One allows students to outline three significant events from the chapter. Another asks the students to compare the points of view of two different characters. The last is a chart where students can identify cause and effect relationships. -Writing Reflection: Each chapter ends with a brief writing prompt for students to answer both in words and illustrations. I hope your students enjoy this book as much as my students did! Please let me know any feedback you may have! This lesson can be used with chapters 7 or 8 of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and gives detailed steps on investigating the complexity and contrasting natures of the character Pearl. (While this lesson works well with these chapters, it could also be used at another point in the novel to research Pearl.) The activity of the lesson uses two well-known poems to aid students in investigating the text of The Scarlet Letter and the character of Pearl more closely. It asks that students read both the poems and the novel closely and use quotes as evidence to support their ideas. This lesson is slated to take place during a 45 minute class period, however, it could be expanded to take 5-15 minutes longer if time is available. (Note: as some of the vocabulary of the book and the poems may be unfamiliar to students, it is a good idea to provide them with dictionaries or glossaries during this activity.) Keywords: The Scarlet Letter, Pearl, character, poem, poetry, novel, study, lesson, activity, lesson plan, chapter, analysis, Nathaniel Hawthorne

This resource can be used in lessons as part of a project on the English Civil War or as homework assignments. Each task earns a certain number of points and some tasks have the option of earning extra points if they 'push themselves' in an extension. Students have to choose what assignments they want to complete but the total number of points must add up to 15. Tasks include: Devise a timeline of long term causes Draw a cartoon strip of short term sparks An extended writing piece (Essay Question) Create Fact files on individuals Write a newspaper article Find and analyse a source on the Civil War. This could be used as part of a unit of study on the English Civil War or Stuart England, or they can be completed using text books or the internet. This is a complete, loosely-structured unit. Rather than a day-by-day schedule, you will find a collection of materials that you may use in any sequence. You will likely skip some activities, alter some activities and documents (these are writable Word documents), and change the order of delivery year by year, based on your scheduling, style, and type of students. This unit contains: 1. 9 quiz/discussion documents, one for each chapter. (These are the core of the unit) 2. Multiple essay prompts and an essay rubric (alter the point values to meet your own needs) 3. Several in-class activities 4. A set of 10 vocabulary words to introduce the play 5. A meta-cognitive preview and a starter activity 6. Several universal activities, to be used with any novel/drama/poetry unit Notes and ideas for application of materials: There is no schedule, order or pacing guide for my assignments. Pick and choose from the files in the folder and move at your own pace. All assignments are Word documents. Feel free to edit and revise my lessons to make the unit your own. This is important, as all the Quiz/Discussion prompt documents make for excellent study guides or QW (Quick Write) prompts if you reformat them, eliminating the answers to the questions and converting the documents into overheads or handouts. Quizzes & Discussion prompts: These are the heart of the unit. Each document covers a chapter (or other logical breaking point in the text) and starts with several quiz questions. These are followed by several discussion prompts. The idea is to start the class with a quizthese are simply to hold students accountable for the reading. Do these verbally, with students writing answers on binder paper. After the quiz, collect their answers and then hold a discussion, using the discussion prompts on the same document. You can assign any value to the quiz questions to make them fit your program. After the quiz and the discussion, I give the TA the quiz/discussion document to use as a key in grading the quizzes. If delivering verbal quizzes does not fit your pedagogical style, you can easily alter the quiz/discussion documents and convert them into study guides for students to fill out. These are Word documents, so you may alter them in any way you wish. Group activities are to be done in your own style. I usually put students into groups of 3 and then collect one written assignment for the group, giving all members of the group a shared grade. Introductory research is usually a 24-hour assignment in which students use the internet or library to find information that will be relevant to the novel or play. This is a way to establish schema, or background knowledge about the unit. Journal prompts and quick writes (QW): Just what it sounds like: these are short writing prompts that work nicely before a discussion.
