608 Squadron transferred from 12 (Fighter) Group to 18 (Reconnaissance) Group on 20 March 1939 and swapped their Hawker Demons for Avro Ansons. This aircraft was destroyed after crashing during a night navigation exercise on 9 August 1943.

This Aircraft went to a Maintenance Unit and was numbered 7745M after being damaged rolling over at Turnhill on 13 February 1962.

Commanded by Group Captain C. H. Elliot-Smith, AFC, Thornaby became No.9 Flying Training School in No.23 Group (Training Command) in 1936 when 21 Hawker Harts, 9 Hawker Audax's and 3 Avro Tutors arrived on 2 March. The Advanced Training Squadron formed on 1 July, by which time all but three of their Harts had been replaced with 20 Audax's, 6 Gloster Gauntlets had also been added to the establishment - on 13 August Gauntlets were replaced with Hawker Fury's. On 10 May 1937, instructions were received from Training Command that the unit were to move to RAF Hullavington. On 21 May 6 Avro Ansons were alloted, but were to be held in reserve at RAF Manston until the unit moved to Hullavington. By 20 June all Tutor aircraft were withdrawn and the Advance Party left Thornaby for Hullavington on the 24th, the Rear Party on the 29th and the Main Party on 8 July. This aircraft was struck off charge in March 1937 having crashed on the N. York Moors between Rosedale and Glaisdale on 2 January.
