Arran seals
The vessel at the pier is the Caledonian Steam Packet Company's turbine steamer "Marchioness of Graham" which ran the service to Arran from Ardrossan in the years immediately preceding the introduction of car ferries in 1957. Think I'm right in saying the MoG was the last turbine steamer built for service on the Clyde (1936) and it was written of her at the time "Immediately aft of the funnel on the promenade deck is a large clear space for the accommodation of motor-cars, in which there is a considerable amount of traffic to and from the Island of Arran." Note also the two puffers at the inner harbour to the right of the steamer pier.

Lochranza Castle - This castle was given to Clan Montgomery in 1452, by King James II, when Ranald MacAlister failed to pay his rent. This is the probable source of the Montgomerie/MacAlister feud in which the MacAlisters attacked the lands of Skelmorlie and carried off a huge sum of wealth. Clan Montgomerie also possessed most of the villages on the northern end of the Arran Island until the year 1705 when all Montgomerie estates on Arran were sold to the Hamiltons to repay a debt.

Aaran whisky distillery is located East of the village of Lochranza at the North of the island and takes its water from the Loch na Davie.
The visual impact of Arran from Kintyre never ceases to amaze me. On a day like this I can quite easily say that I'm a wee bit overwhelmed by the view. It puts things into perspective for me. It makes me feel a wee bit small and insignificant [but not in a bad way !]. Its a view I shall never ever tire of or ever take for granted...
