If you've been following my stories for the past few weeks, you'll know that I've been raving over the Plated Prisoner series by @ravenkennedybooks . I'm coming out of a slight hangover from book three (Gleam - for which this illustration is a MAJOR SPOILER). I only say slight, because the book gave me so much art fodder, it will keep me satiated enough until Glow comes out next year. Each book trumps the previous as my favorite. Please, I urge you to avoid reading below if you plan to read the series, it's so worth the first time experience. (Be sure to check content warnings!) *** SPOILERS BELOW FOR GLEAM *** You know when you're cooking a nice steak and work so hard to tenderize, season and sizzle it to perfection - but have to wait those agonizing minutes for the meat to set, the juices to flow, all before you can take that first decadent bite? That 👏 is 👏 this 👏 scene.👏 I've said this in one of my lives, but best thing I love about TPP series is how the world building has rules, and with those rules comes restrictions. It's my favorite thing to read how the characters (or plot) have to puzzle out how to get around those restrictions. This scene was so creative in how it used Auren's time limit for her powers to elevate the tension of this scene; the steak was JUICY.

Inspirational artist quotes, about life and art, can be a motivator for any artist, and here are 60 quotes about art that are motivating!
Photographed at Ground Zero NYC, HH March 2002 I watched Channel 4 News' coverage of the funding cuts. They seemed to be the only channel giving more than a cursory summation of the Arts Council funding cuts. I'd been aggravated during the day by comments dismissing the arts as unnecessary, attributing cut backs in the NHS to overfunding of the arts. Channel 4 News had a guest who thought there should be no public funding of the arts. In that case, there should be no public funding of the banks, or the privatised rail network. But we pay taxes, and those are spent by the government for the greater good. Though not life saving, culture can be life enhancing and life affirming. It can provide welfare and can build cohesion and understanding in our multi cultural nation. Yesterday, I think the Arts Council did well with their much cut budget, and coverage showed the diversity of the arts in our country. I just hope that with a government so hell bent on reducing everything to its economic value, and so short sighted with its planning, that we don't through away arts and culture. When Margaret Thatcher said "There is no such thing as society', she cursed us all with her prophesy. There must be society, and civilised society should allow people the fundamental right to express themselves creatively and find well being, solace and beauty. Making all culture only valid if it has commercial value leads to dilution of creativity and plagiarism. We must continue to support arts education and arts funding to nurture the best talent to keep growing our creative industries. Without financial input, there won't be a high quality creative output that will allow our creative industries to flourish.
EDIT - if you've entered my blog at this post, you need to know that I started blogging again on July 9th...click on that date or "Newer Post" at the bottom of the page and read why I couldn't stop after all! I have been blogging for almost 4 years now and have decided it's time for me to stop. It's not a sudden decision for me. You might remember that in February I blogged about Trying to get to where I want to be. From that post :: BEFORE YOU PLOP DOWN IN FRONT OF THE TV OR COMPUTER - GO TO YOUR {PLACE WHERE YOU STORE YOUR CREATIVE STUFF} AND REMIND YOURSELF WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO BE DOING This is a pretty wordy post, considering I could have just posted my first sentence, but I've loved blogging so much, I might have to come back and remind myself why I've stopped! I spend a lot of time creating my blog (taking photographs of my creative steps, cropping them, composing the post, loading the photos, editing, adding labels, linking to other posts) – that’s all time I feel I'll be happier spending just creating. Often I finish a smaller project to be able to get a blog post done instead of working on a larger project where my heart really is. I know that’s not what I have to do, and others don't work like that, but it’s what I've felt I needed to do to keep my blog interesting. Given the above, at times it can be disappointing to create a post and then get no comments – I didn't start the blog to get an award or 20 comments a day, but it is nice to know when someone has called by and liked what they saw. Sometimes it's hard to blog when you don't think anyone is interested. I've moved on from feeling disappointed about no comments. Stats show that people visit regularly. When I get comments they do give me a buzz, but they are not the reason I blog. When I started, my reasons for blogging included I want to have a diary of my art experiments/projects; a visual record of what I am watching, reading, seeing, thinking. My daily calendar journaling practice will now take care of that need. I've met lots of lovely people in blogland, and I will still call in occasionally and catch up on what you're doing at your online place. And I find it both nice, and ironic, that what I shared in my second blog post back in July 2010 Note to Self is now a really good place for me to finish ::
