Jean Theodoor Toorop s-a nascut in 20 decembrie 1858 in Purworejo, Java, Dominațiile coloniale Olandeze. In 1880 a devenit student la Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Din 1882 pana in 1886 a locuit in Bruxelles, unde s-a alaturat miscarii artistice Les XX (Les Vingts), un grup de artisti centrati in jurul lui James Ensor. Toorop a pictat in diferite stiluri in acei ani, ca de exemplu realism, impresionism neo-impresionism si post-impresionism. Dupa casatoria in 1886 cu o femeie engleza, Annie Hall, Toorop si-a petrecut timpul intre Haga, Anglia si Bruxelles, iar dupa 1890 in Katwijk aan Zee, un oras de pe tarmul olandez. In aceasta perioada si-a dezvoltat propriul lui stil unic simbolist, cu linii dinamice, imprevizibile bazate pe motive indoneziene, figuri suple foarte stilizate si curbilinii. Ulterior a trecut la stilul Art Nouveau in care un joc a similar de linii e folosit in scop decorativ, aparent fara nici un sens simbolic. In 1905 s-a convertit la catolicism si a inceput sa produca lucrari religioase. Toorop a murit pe 3 martie 1928 in Haga, Olanda. Jan Toorop(20 decembrie 1858 – 3 martie 1928), pictor olandez
