Poland Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. Wyszło średnio ale lepszego nie udało mi się zrobić .:(
Torún (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997), Poland, Jul-2011. Press "L" for large version on gray background. Me, my brother Jean-Philip Albert Struck spend with our father Hans Joachim Dieter Struck his 70th birthday in the spectacular medieval citadel of Torún (formerly the prussian town of Thorn), at the shore of the Vistula River, where Nicolaus Copernicus was born in 1473. This stop was part of a road trip from Berlin, where our father was born in 1941, to our Pomeranian roots, where his grandparents were small farmers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This image shows part of the Old Market Square (Rynek Staromiejski) of Torún. The building with the tower and clock is the gothic City Hall (Ratusz) where you can have an outstanding "bird's-eye view" of the whole citadel, the Vistula River and adjacencies. The Ratusz construction began in 1274, the building was extended and rebuilt between 1391 and 1399, and extended again at the end of the 16th century, it is one of the most monumental town halls in Central Europe. Just in front of it, there is a statue of Copernicus (you can see it in the right background). The church on the left background is the Holy Spirit Church (18th century), one of many churches in the Old Town. The donkey metal statue is a reenactment of an old wooden medieval donkey that once stood in the same place as a means of punishing criminals. The metal rod along the back of the statue was originally extremely sharp. Prisoners would have been forced to sit, tied to the donkey and then flogged. In serious cases, they would have their legs weighed down so that they would have suffered maximum pain with the sharp rod. Torún is famous for having preserved almost intact its medieval spatial layout and many Gothic buildings, all built from brick, including monumental churches, the City Hall and many historical houses. Unlike many other historical cities in Poland, Torún escaped substantial destruction in World War II. Particularly left intact was the Old Town (Stare Miasto), all of whose important architectural monuments are originals, not reconstructions. It has a rich historical background, that can traced back to 1100 BC (Lusatian Culture) passing through Teutonic Knights, Polish, Hanseatic League, Prussian, German (among others) influences over the centuries. It is definitely polish since 1945. See where this picture was taken. [?]
