Yes/No Character Trait Game Fairy Tales is a fun way for students to think about character traits. This fairy tales activity provides students with additional practice in making inferences about characters, and sorting their character traits into the correct category. Students will also be expanding their vocabulary, whilst making inferences about the characters! Product Use ♥ Literacy centers ♥ Assessment ♥ Whole class game, in pairs of small groups ♥ Class discussions The whole class game is a great to way to promote discussions with your class about various characters in popular fairy tales and why students infer that the character has a particular trait. This fairy tales game can be played with 1-2 players or played as a whole class. To play the game you select a character card and a character trait card. You then sort the character trait card under the correct heading. For example if I selected the character Cinderella and the character trait elegant I would place the character trait card elegant under the yes heading. (see preview for example). I then select 7 more character traits and place it under the correct heading: yes or no. Once player 1 has had their turn they return the cards to the bottom of the piles and then it is player 2's turn. The game consists of: • 2 heading - yes/no • teacher instructions • 17 character cards - Cinderella, The Prince, Fairy Godmother, The Stepmother, Stepsisters, The First Little Pig, The Second Little Pig, The Third Little Pig, The Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wolf, Grandma, Woodcutter, Jack, Giant and Jack's Mother. • 64 character trait cards By playing this game regularly in class students will have a deeper understanding about character traits. Answers may vary with students as they have different beliefs and personal opinions. Please see the preview for a closer look at some of the task cards. This lesson builds creative writing skills by modeling how to brainstorm, write, revise, edit, and share a story. In 24 pages, the child will • choose, draw, and write a character and setting, • discuss, plan, and write each sentence, • revise the story by adding an adjective, • edit sentences by checking for capital letters, punctuation, and spaces, • check spelling by using a picture dictionary, • read aloud the story to others, and • listen and ask questions. Key vocabulary: author, story, character, setting, first sentence, next sentence, last sentence, describing word, check, big letters, periods, big spaces, little spaces, picture dictionary, practice, share, listen, ask questions This story writing pack is the sixth lesson of Book 23 from the Newitt Beginning Reading and Writing Program. The program provides a fundamental yet integrated approach to reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. The standards-based series of 24 books guides novice learners through a full year curriculum. Each lesson discovers, connects, and practices the basics of English. A key feature of the program is that it uses linear incremental steps and repeated practices linked to higher level thinking skills. This approach gives the learner a solid foundation of reading and writing experiences. In the process, the learner gains routine study habits, motivation to learn, confidence, and mastery. Please print the lesson double-sided and then cut in half, so that each page is 5 1/2” by 8 1/2”. Each lesson has 24 sides. For the story companion to this writing lesson, please see "Describe Characters: Lesson 6, Book 21 (Newitt Literature Series)". Please click here for more lessons on writing fiction. This lesson is available also in Spanish! For the Spanish version, please click here! I created these Common Core (CCSS) aligned discussion and constructed response questions for Hoot by Carl Hiaasen when I taught fifth grade. The questions are text dependent and they address a broad range of common core standards for English Language Arts. The bundle includes: 24 digital text dependent discussion questions for use on Google Classroom. The questions are chunked into 3 sections to prevent kids from reading too far ahead or reading "spoilers". I have also included a R.A.C.E.S. chart to remind students to use R.A.C.E.S. when answering discussion questions; the same questions in printable form in both color and black and white versions. In addition, both the digital and the printable sets include six extended constructed response questions that prompt students to compare and contrast, write about character change and character development, write opinion, and write creatively. I was inspired to create these by Julianne Russell, who has shared how she used them in her classroom here: Khan Academy Blog I take no credit for the idea or the art provided by Khan Academy. I created this to help other teachers implement the same great idea that has been shared by Khan Academy.

My product includes detailed step-by-step photo illustrations that show how to assemble the book. Just print the pages, and you are ready to fold! I highly recommend that you fold and assemble your own stretch book before making them with students. The learning curve is well worth it in the end! :-) If students are folding and assembling their own books, this product is appropriate for students in 4th grade and up.
