Are you feeling overwhelmed with the new BC curriculum? It can be a lot to transform your entire year of teaching. I'm here to help you out! This past year I worked with the new science curriculum in my classroom and a colleagues. These units are all very hands-on and lab based. By the end of any of these units your students will have an excellent understanding of the Scientific Method. Grade 3 At the end of this unit, students will make solar ovens and cook S'mores. So much fun! They were really delicious too. If we did this again, I would like to make English muffin pizzas. Grade 4 This short unit covers all 10 energy kinetic and potential energy types and their transfer. Kids love breaking down the process of energy transfer in the "Ball Bounce" lab. This unit contains resources to teach all aspects of matter: molecules, kinetic energy, phase change, effect of temperature and more. Be prepared to purchase several packages of balloons from the dollar store for this unit. I used them A LOT. They were great to show the effect of temperature on a gas as well as many other things. This one one of my favourite lessons in the unit - physical and chemical change. Students investigated 6 different white powders to determine what type of change they were. They loved using pipettes to drop the mystery liquid on and watch what happened! The oohs and aahs were hilarious! Grade 5 I loved teaching this unit! So many fun activities can be done with every day objects when teaching Simple Machines! Again, this unit has everything: informational articles, interactive notebook foldables, detailed lesson plans, lab activities.... No need for any supplementary resources here! Even a study sheet and test is included! If you're just looking for something to supplement your Simple Machines unit, each of the lessons are sold separately too. Just click on the image above and follow the links from there to the individual files. Concentration, pH, dissolving, and filtration: these are all concepts covered in the Solutions unit. Students loved being able to use "real" science tools like litmus paper and use their problem solving skills to filter clean drinking water. Grade 4/5 Split The grade 4 and 5 units are both available in a bundle if you teach a grade 4/5 split as I did last year. In these units you'll find everything you would if you purchased separately, as well as a combined unit study sheet and test. They are both sold for 20% off of the price of buying individually. The entire unit has been tested by my class. They really enjoyed every step of it! When we first built our lapbooks, they were really enthusiastic about doing so. They loved colouring it and taking some ownership. I usually give a study sheet to go home before each test, but I told them that their lapbook would be their study sheet this time around. I feel like that really increased their buy-in. So, what do you get in this file? Here's the table of contents: You'll see that there are 2 non-fiction reads included, as well as links to YouTube videos, instructions for experiments/demos and lots and lots of blacklines for foldables. You get everything you need from start to finish, including a show what you know poster activity and a unit test. This unit took me about 4 weeks to teach. The pieces are easy to assemble and kids love doing it! Click on any of the pictures, or right here, to go to get yourself a copy. Check out my Light and Sound board on Pinterest for more ideas. If you take the time to use this lesson, Please rate it -it is a free PDF lesson. I really would appreciate your ratings - over 500 Tpters have downloaded it! This is an individual lesson taken from a multisensory unit on story elements. As you will see, students are provided with the necessary information and additional activities to support development of imagery as a story element beyond the memorization of story elements. If you like the focus and content of the lessons, and value the multisensory approach this product offers, then click on the green star under my picture and store name to become a follower. All of my products are based on a multisensory approach so students develop and internalize the concepts... It is critical for students to engage in learning where they go beyond memorization of definitions and into a stage of application of the concept. Just think about how many of your students can tell you about story elements, but when it comes to sharing different elements in written work presented in class it is almost as if students have never been exposed to story elements. BUT you know you have completed lessons with your class on story elements! Why is it important to understand at a deeper level the impact and importance story elements have when students are reading novels, either fiction and non-fiction? For more meaningful learning! Unfortunately, students often skip through pages because they just see "words" and not the complex, but interesting strategies and techniques authors use to create a plot from beginning to end. Also, students who understand imagery as a writer's tool, will view a page of "words" differently. Students begin to see the images through visual, auditory, thermal images. This is a great concept that students often miss or have not learned. So it needs to be taught in a multisensory manner for true learning. I recommend you view other products in my store - especially the unit on story elements: Part One. Just preview the unit and see!
