Since my last scenery update several people commented on my rock face and how I did it so I will do my best to explain how it was done, Fist a couple of photos of the rock face in question. 📷 📷 I start off with a cardboard lattice which is my preferred method for all of my scenery, a good fame to support it is also needed if you are planning on tall vertical scenery. 📷 📷 I then cover the cardboard lattice with cut up paper towels dipped in runny plaster, I try to over lap them by 50% so that by the time I have finished the whole area has two layers. This is where good framing is important as once the water from the plaster soaks into the cardboard it can weaken the cardboard and it will collapse making a big mess ! In the areas where I am just going to apply grass or other scenery products I also apply a layer of sloppy plaster to give a nice solid scenery base but for the areas that are to have rockwork added I just use the paper towels, if you plan ahead and know where your rocks are going to go you can leave the area of lattice bare and attach the rocks straight to the lattice. I use both Plaster of Paris and casting plaster, I use Casting plaster because it is cheap, I use this to dip the paper towels in and for the final scenery shell. Plaster of Paris is used for the rocks as it has a better finish when dry and is easier to shape and carve latter on. I use two different types of molds for the rockwork, First is a latex rock mold made by a local manufacturer - Scenic Textures. The first batch of molds they produced were very similar to home made molds made with Woodland Scenics Latex but now they use a thicker black rubber similar to Woodland Scenics molds. It is the first type that I used on this layout and I found them easy to work with, the second is Woodland Scenics rock molds but I only use their molds if I can blend them into the other molds to create unique rocks, one thing I have learnt is there is nothing worse than someone looking at your layout and saying "I recognize that rock so and so has the same one on his layout ! Spread the plaster over the mold and then press it onto the lattice or dry plaster. Be sure to soak the dry plaster with water prior the placing the wet plaster onto it otherwise dry plaster will soak up all the water from the wet plaster before it dries and it wont bond together, I find this best done with a spray bottle. When the rock mold starts to get warm and the plaster feels firm carefully remove the mold by lifting one corner and gently peel it off. I usually do three or four molds at a time and leave them for a day before commencing. The next step is to blend the rocks into lattice or plaster soaked paper towels. For the lattice I use plaster soaked paper towels pushing them into the edges of the rock and overlapping the dry plaster soaked paper towels already there. when they have dried I then rub a thicker mix of plaster over them to blend it all together. For the plaster soaked paper towels i just rub plaster over them to blend them together. Once everything is dry after two or three days I carve the rocks to blend them in together and to make them more natural looking. Painting and weathering the rocks plus adding the scenery materials to come in part 2 📷 The three woodland Scenics rock molds I used. 📷 Locally made latex rock molds.
