Noah's Ark Has Been Found. Why Are They Keeping Us In The Dark?
Possibly, in the dim and distant past, Clair the Cape Queen was involved with adventurer/spy Modesty Blaise, whose continent-crossing crime-fighting set-up went under the name The Network. No pretence, no long-winded nonsense. The Network. End of. Yes, there was plenty of international derring-do in the Modesty novels, a la James Bond, but also plenty of UK-set grittiness, the type more likely to be found in a Len Deighton work. And who’s to say Clair the Cape Queen wasn’t once part of The Network? Wearing her late-’60s/early-‘70s Aquascutum cape she might very well have made a dash up the A1 in her Sunbeam Tiger (none of that Aston Martin nonsense here) from her London base on a Modesty mission. Standing high up on the hills waiting to meet her contact there’s a proper 1960s spy air to the look. If it rained, Clair was protected against the elements, but she had an element of coolness that hints she’s a little more in charge than her contact might like to think…
Way out West, out among the trees Feraline donned a selection of Pluvmantelo capes… typically just as the rain stopped. But, as always, our muse took to the capes, including a rubber one recently arrived from Latvia. An old yellow oilskin one added a splash of colour, a long dark blue rubber one some sobriety. And let’s not forget out bespoke short clear green one too whose pvc is as stiff as the stiffest cardboard… As always, comments welcome.

Those of a certain age will remember when magazines and books were full of photographs taken with Ektachrome film. The slightly muted shades are a classic from 50 or 60 years ago, but those images have stood the test of time. And we’ve looked to repeat that here as Clair The Cape Queen turned her talents to tweaking the images with the intention of scrolling back to the 1970s. We fervently believe it’s an utter success – what do you think?

In 1978 The Stranglers released a three-track single, ‘Walk On By’/‘Tank’/‘Old Codger’, the new wave seven-inch peaking at number 21. Whether Clair The Cape Queen was thinking of Surrey’s finest we don’t know, but she showed us the abandoned Sherman tank she’d discovered in the wild moors of Mercia. The voluminous rubber military cape she wore was entirely appropriate, not only because of the tank but also the wild, unforgiving weather she had to put up with. But a large cape such as this one meant The Cape Queen was dry and warm. So… kool and practical and lookin’ good, mixed with some military history: The Cape Queen nailed it.
